Everyone would receive cash payment regardless of wealth or employment

Fife Council is investigating if a citizens basic income scheme is feasible in Scotland. A STUDY group including Fife Council has developed a citizens’ basic income (CBI) pilot scheme that is "desirable" but will face a number of challenges.

It’s one of four local authorities – joined by Glasgow, Edinburgh and North Ayrshire – who are looking at the feasibility of a regular, unconditional payment for all individuals.

The idea, brought into sharper focus by Covid-19 and the financial hardship it’s wreaking, is that a CBI would replace benefits and be given to every citizen regardless of wealth, employment or personal […]

Kamala Harris campaigns for vice president with more promises of free stuff

Kamala Harris has long been seen as the front-runner of Joe Biden’s possible running mates, but after the police killing of George Floyd put racial issues at the center of Joe Biden’s campaign for the presidency, the stocks of other black contenders with less criminal justice baggage, such as Val Demings and Keisha Lance Bottoms, have risen. Never one to let a crisis go to waste, Harris is out with her own coronavirus cash promise even after she was spotted violating social distancing rules at a Black Lives Matter protest in Washington.

So it should come as no surprise that […]

The bold policies we need from Welsh Labour’s next manifesto

I represent Alyn and Deeside in the Senedd – for those who aren’t up to speed on devolution, that’s the body that was called the Welsh Assembly until recently. My constituency last year became the only seat in north Wales to elect a Labour MP. It is largely a manufacturing community that has living memory of what unmanaged economic change can do to an area. My town is Connah’s Quay and its moto is ‘success through industry’.

Coronavirus has affected us all, but I am deeply concerned about the economic impact of the Covid-19 crisis on communities like mine. I […]
