© REUTERS / Sergio Perez The government of Pedro Sanchez will devote 3 billion euros to the establishment of the minimum living income. In Spain, the socialist government of Pedro Sanchez must approve this Tuesday, May 26, a project awaited for months by the left electorate, and by its ally Podemos: the establishment of a "minimum living income". Amid all the momentous events that have defined the coronavirus pandemic, the decision by both the Trump administration and, in near-unanimous votes, both houses of Congress to institute a “stimulus” program — an element of which amounts to a de facto […]

The time for a Universal Basic Income is ripe

The time for a Universal Basic Income is ripe

THE Archbishop of Canterbury launched his “war on Wonga” in 2013, as a campaign against household debt. In 2008, debt had reached 147 per cent of household disposable income. Hovering just under 130 per cent since then, in 2019 it stood at 126.8 per cent. According to the Financial Conduct Authority , 12 per cent of UK adults (5.9 million people) have no savings and investments at all. Of those in the most vulnerable financial category, 3.7 million could only cover living expenses for a week if they lost their main source of income.

And this was before the coronavirus […]

Seniors Minister Deb Schulte speaks during a press conference on Parliament Hill on June 4, 2020. OTTAWA — A special one-time payment to millions of seniors will arrive in early July, a delay the Liberals say is the result of ensuring there isn’t any fraud in the pandemic-related top-up.

The aid will come in the form of $300 payments to the more than six million people who receive old-age security benefits, and an additional $200 for the 2.2 million who also receive the guaranteed income supplement.

‘When All Men Are Paid for Existing’: Universal Basic Income Has Arrived

Such an expansion of the welfare state would have once kept conservatives awake at night.

Amid all the momentous events that have defined the coronavirus pandemic, the decision by both the Trump administration and, in near-unanimous votes, both houses of Congress to institute a “stimulus” program — an element of which amounts to a de facto universal basic income (UBI) — is perhaps the least appreciated.

Paying individuals a flat check of $1,200, is, effectively, a one-time UBI. Legislators are already considering a second round. The long-term import of this is significant. At a time when the two parties can agree on […]

A new report from The Information explains how Apple has been trying to build completely automated factories in China for almost eight years now, and yet it’s faced repeated challenges in trying to […]

Financial planningThe instability of the stock market is already causing shifts in investment advice. A blind reliance on a 401(k) for retirement savings, thanks to an 11-year stock […]

Parenting Is a Job. The Government Should Cut Parents Checks

Despite the fact that the payments, $1,200 per adult and $500 per child, represented an odd sort of governmental arithmetic about the worth of American children, the stimulus checks Americans received in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic have reignited the long-smoldering conversation of universal basic income. Thanks to efforts by Andrew Yang and Bernie Sanders, the public opinion about some sort of direct governmental payment to citizens is, according to some polls, split . Roughly 50-percent of Americans think that a regular payment is necessary in the face of a fragile economy. That’s not an insignificant amount. Due […]
