Cole: Socialism is not the American way

Cole: Socialism is not the American way

Tom Cole The Democratic Party’s tightening embrace of socialist proposals and politicians is real cause for alarm, especially in a country whose very foundation is liberty.

Indeed, the precious freedoms that exist here in America have always set us apart. Just think about how many people still want to come to the United States to have a share in the American dream.

Because of the freedoms secured by brave patriots long ago and preserved time and again for generations, our land is one of endless opportunity – where hard work, determination and innovation are rewarded, and the American dream can be […]

Universal Basic Income — Where’s the purpose?

Universal Basic Income -- Where's the purpose?

Universal Basic Income is getting a lot of attention again these days. While I think it’s part of a solution, it’s missing a crucial element: People need a sense of purpose in their lives. Separately, a lot of people have trouble finding that sense of purpose on their own. Put together, this means that in parallel to any basic income program, we will need to create social institutions that appeal to people’s notions of achievement, provider roles, community, and social feedback mechanisms.

This could be a wide variety of things that provide a sense of community and achievement — everything […]

California City Gives Residents $500 a Month as Part of Universal Basic Income Test

If people in need were given $500 each month, how would they spend it? The country ’s first mayor-led guaranteed income program is trying to find out.

The privately-funded, 18-month initiative, called the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration or SEED , began giving 125 residents of Stockton, California, $500 a month on a debit card last February. SEED randomly selected residents who were at least 18 years old and lived in a neighborhood where the median income is at or below $46,033, the city’s median at the time. Researchers have been regularly checking in with recipients to analyze how they’ve spent […]

Building heavy equipment

Heavy equipment manufacturers and those Canadian companies that machine and fabricate parts for the industry have their fingers crossed that 2020 will be a productive year after a relatively lacklustre 2019.

While there are still challenges on the horizon, namely that factories and machine shops are having difficulty finding skilled labour and machinists to do the work, the consensus is that the heavy equipment manufacturing industry will be in good shape, and many are looking to more automation […]

BarterUnit – An independently developed community currency with an embedded UBI program progressively changing America through the process of social-economic collaboration

It seems like everyone is talking about Universal Basic Income (UBI) programs these days. On the West Coast, we have California State Assemblyman Evan Low proposing Assembly Bill 2712, a UBI program for California residents. On the East Coast we have New York State Legislature Ron Kim working on the Inclusive Value Ledger (IVL) initiative, a New York statewide payment system with an embedded UBI feature.

Meanwhile, a California entrepreneur quietly builds an all-embracing privatized digital currency system. It is the first independently developed community currency with an embedded payment system and UBI program – offering its UBI program to […]
