Getting paid to do nothing: why the idea of China’s dibao is catching on

Getting paid to do nothing: why the idea of China’s dibao is catching on

With machines and automation threatening the livelihoods of many workers, such as truck drivers, many countries are now looking to a universal basic income system to boost their economies. Photo: K. Y. Cheng China’s minimum living standard guarantee, named dibao , is receiving fresh interest in the region as countries from Korea to India turn to universal basic income (UBI) to boost their economies and combat the coming automation-induced job crisis.

UBI, or the regular distribution of free money to all citizens as a form of social security, has been on the fringes of economic policy debate since the late […]

The basic income discussion

No, read it more carefully. He’s saying that “secretly inserted into the 30 people are 4 people who would loaf, complain, etc…” In other words, he’s not saying that some people are just lazy, he’s RIGGING the “test” on his little fantasy by ASSUMING that some people are lazy. In actual reality, most people would work if given the chance. Ughh…where’s the smart people around here? Rig the test any way you want it! My insertion of the “plants” still shows a basic tenet of human behavior!
End of Story!!
Don’t put the plants in there! Run the […]

Would basic income increase personality differences in a way that gender equality did gender differences in Scandinavia?

Would basic income increase personality differences in a way that gender equality did gender differences in Scandinavia?

That’s a very big question.

I think the easiest way to conceptualise the differences would be to start with the concept of ‘entrepreneurship’. Most media/publication exposure to the public for entrepreneurship is very ‘celebrity-like’, in the sense that you don’t often hear from failed ones, more you hear about successful ones describing their failures. There’s a serious amount of selection-bias in ‘making it work’, and it’s often a self-selected group, let alone other selection pressures – I think you’d probably find a fair amount of narcissism! I think the arena can be somewhat like acting, in that information the average […]

Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government has promised to offer details this month about where and how the program would be tested in Ontario.
Federally, the House of Commons finance committee called on the federal government a year ago to consider a pilot study of its own.

Can universal basic income counter ill-effects of digital economy?

Platforms like eBay, Uber, Airbnb, and Freelancer are thriving, growing the digital economy and disrupting existing business. The question is how to ensure that the transformations they entail have a positive impact on society. Here, universal basic income may have a role to play.

Few social policy ideas are as hot today as universal basic income. Social scientists, technologists, and politicians from both ends of the political spectrum see it as a potential solution to the unemployment that automation and artificial intelligence are expected to create. It has also been floated as a potential solution to the rise of the […]

Basic Income and the Left: The political and economic problems

Basic Income and the Left: The political and economic problems

This article is part of a series of articles I am publishing examining Basic Income, the labour movement, automation, and the Left. I have already published a piece looking at the history of Basic Income and the labour movement, “ Basic Income or a reduced work week? An old labour debate .” The next article will examine the relationship between automation and Basic Income. Should the Left and labour support a demand for a Basic Income (BI)? This simple question has provoked a fervent and confusing debate.

The discussion over BI touches on real political and economic anxieties. The attack […]

Guaranteed income money for nothin’?

Guaranteed income money for nothin’?

Mike Strobel (QMI Agency) Our civic leaders are putting Toronto in line for a piece of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s “guaranteed basic income” pilot project pie.

Of course they are. “Basic income” is pure social engineering — and that’s catnip to our councillors. Plus, it’s FREE MONEY!

Hit it, Dire Straits:“Now look at them yo-yos, that’s the way you do it… money for nothin’ and the chicks are free.”OK, maybe that’s harsh. (Plus you can’t say “chicks” anymore.)Unless you’ve been in a coma or too busy at work, you’ve heard of a “basic income.”In a nutshell, it guarantees every citizen a minimum […]
