(Photo: Gallo Images / Esa Alexander) Thuli Madonsela describes the call for a Basic Income Grant as ‘returning to Ubuntu… If I invest in you I am investing in myself. As a country, we are stronger when everyone amongst us is strong.’ In a webinar yesterday Madonsela also called for an urgent need for ‘rethinking capitalism’, noting that a secure ‘income is the basis for every other human right’.

With only one day left in April, the clock on food security is rapidly ticking towards midnight for the six […]

Sudan's basic income scheme aims to ease economic pain

For Intisar Altayib, who ekes out a living drawing henna tattoos in Khartoum, soaring prices in Sudan mean running up tabs at local stores and cutting back on evening feasts during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

She is one of millions struggling through an economic crisis that has deepened as Sudan tries to emerge from decades of isolation and conflict. Inflation has risen to more than 340% and there are shortages of everything from power to medicines.

To ease the pain of reforms the government is introducing a donor-funded scheme that aims to provide a temporary $5 basic monthly income […]

We often evaluate the development of countries using economic indicators such as gross domestic product (GDP) per capita or average household income, whereby rich countries are considered to be more developed than poor countries. While this may be a generally true statement when describing the overall development of a nation, these indicators do not tell us the whole story of […]

How Basic Income Could Promote Economic Advancement Rather Than Government Dependency

By Wayne Winegarden and Tim Anaya

Last month, Right by the Bay reviewed the findings of a new study touted by former Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs reportedly showing the success of the city’s universal basic income scheme.

Reviewing the report’s findings, we concluded that there were many serious questions with the analysis, “making any conclusions about the efficacy (or inefficacy) of a UBI impossible to draw.”The program is catching on. On the heels of Stockton’s news, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf announced a privately-funded $500 per month basic income program. Last week, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti announced a basic income program […]

Force UK Gov to support Universal Basic Income.

Force UK Gov to support Universal Basic Income.

The goal is to get Boris Johnson’s UK Government to U-Turn on Universal Basic Income (UBI). This is done by leaflet dropping in multiple ex Red Wall seats that the Tories won in the December 2019 General Election. Red Wall Tory voters are predominately working class and still left of centre on money issues. The Conservative government cannot afford to lose these voters. In my leaflet I will inform people in those towns that in Scotland the SNP Government is going to introduce a Minimum Income Guarantee of about £198 a week… See here: https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/poverty-eradicated-in-scotland-in-a-decade-with-minimum-state-income-claims-report-3179059 And then if Scots […]

THE JOKE IS ON US

I have just been reading the April 24 edition of the Sun , I can’t stop laughing. On the front page “Burnt out” and Michele Mandel’s column, “Judge sounds off.” This judge is really showing them, wow, he really sent a strong message — a conditional sentence for arson and fraud over $5,000. What a joke. I’ll bet the rest of the accused persons are also laughing their heads off.Raymond Woolley Ajax(Again, our justice system fails to send a deterring message) FORD’S […]
