Is the era of free money from Uncle Sam upon us?

Is the era of free money from Uncle Sam upon us?

It was once nothing more than wild speculation within the lofty ivory towers of Harvard and Yale, and maybe in the corporate boardrooms of America’s most “forward-looking companies.”

Humans are almost obsolete. Jeff Bezos, even if he is nothing more than a brain floating in an anomalous liquid mounted onto a robot, is likely to find a way to replace every human being’s job within the century. That being the case, wonder the titans of industry, finance and scholarship, how do we keep the proles from rebelling against their own planned obsolescence? The answer that many have arrived at is: […]

Biden’s American Rescue Plan is actually a huge new school reform

President Biden’s $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan is aimed at helping the country recover from the coronavirus pandemic — but it is another thing, as well: a major federal school reform unlike those we’ve seen in the past few decades.

While the new law is aimed at helping families get back on their feet and helping businesses and schools reopen after a year of turmoil, it includes measures that together have the potential to slash poverty among the 12 million students who live in low-income households.

Biden himself tweeted recently: “No child should grow up in poverty. The American Rescue Plan […]

Aldermen take first step toward universal basic income pilot program

Some Chicago aldermen are pushing to test out a program guaranteeing a basic income to city residents. Arguing that the coronavirus pandemic has been an “equal opportunity destroyer” in Chicago’s Black and Brown communities, Chicago aldermen on Thursday took their first step toward a trail-blazing solution: universal basic income.

Ald. Gilbert Villegas (36th), chairman of the City Council’s Committee on Economic and Capital Development, led his committee through a subject matter hearing that, he hopes, will quickly result in launching on the guaranteed income pilot, using $30 million of the $1.8 billion avalanche of federal relief funds on its way […]

The American Rescue Plan’s Tacit Admission About America

A woman with a child carries a box of food assistance she received from a food bank in Florida at the start of the pandemic. The American Rescue Plan to be signed into law by President Biden this week is projected to reduce the poverty rate by one-third, the Urban Institute estimates. The think tank originally estimated that around 13.7 percent of U.S. households would be in poverty for the year 2021; the new stimulus package would take that rate down to 8.7 percent. It would reduce child poverty by half.

People of color will benefit the most, they added, […]

A Californian experiment in the provision of guaranteed income returns its first results

FOR THE PAST two years, as part of an experiment, 125 residents of Stockton, a small city in California’s Central Valley, have found themselves $500-a-month richer. The money arrived on or around the 15th of every month, timed to coincide with a period that tends to be sparse for people on typical low-income pay cycles. The recipients were selected at random from a longlist of people who signed up for the experiment online. The only criteria was that they should be adults living in neighbourhoods in which the median income was lower than the median in Stockton overall. Since […]
