INTERVIEW: Econ adviser says basic income, subsidies can’t coexist

NEW DELHI – The economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic and the ensuing lockdown has underscored the need for a wide compass social security net, like the Universal Basic Income, for the most vulnerable sections. The government’s Chief Economic Adviser Krishnamurthy Subramanian feels the scheme can become a possibility only if all subsidies provided by the government are eliminated.
