The OECD and the problems of basic income

According to the OECD, basic income (BI) is not an effective tool for reducing poverty. However, the outcome would depend on the model chosen for implementing a BI system, as well as the changes made in other parts of social protection.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) published in May a Policy Brief paper studying the feasibility of a basic income model in four OECD countries, one of which was Finland.

On June 16, Kela organized a seminar in which Herwig Immervoll , a senior economist at the OECD, discussed the findings of his study and analysed […]

Basic income plan takes shape

Brigitte Petersen Karen Glass, assistant deputy minister of the poverty reduction division for the Ministry of Community and Social Services, fields questions during an information session about the Ontario Basic Income Pilot study at the West Thunder Community Centre in Thunder Bay on Thursday evening.

The city and its surrounding area were recently selected to take part in the project to assess whether a basic income can better support vulnerable workers and improve health and education outcomes for people on low incomes. The study targets the working poor, unemployed people and homeless individuals. About 70 per cent of people living […]

The Sad Reality of Basic Income in Ontario

The Sad Reality of Basic Income in Ontario

{Power/Lines] In the crass lead-up to an election, governments will roll out freebies to people who might be thinking of voting them out. The Ontario government, under Kathleen Wynne’s leadership, has alienated voters with high electricity bills which, in places where homes are heated with electricity and the hydro bill is not included in rent, have caused immense hardship.

In response, the government has announced that young people will now get prescription drugs for free. This is great in a sense: pharmacy costs should be included in medicare, as they are for hospital patients. But upon examination it’s a bit […]

Mike Leach still fumes over dispute with Texas Tech

(Photo: Kirby Lee, USA TODAY Sports) Mike Leach is still angry at certain people from Texas Tech. He says they cheated him and stole his money.

And he’s not letting this go. After his controversial firing by Tech in 2009, the former Red Raiders football coach still wants the school to pay him what he says he’s owed for that year, when Tech had one of its best seasons ever at 9-4.

By his calculations, he’s owed about $2.5 million, including $1.6 million in guaranteed income from his television and radio shows and other marketing deals.“This thing won’t really go away,” […]

Bristol: Like it or not, big government may be here to stay

After reading recent news reports on job automation I’m wondering whether government itself will eventually become the employer of last resort. Actually that might not be such a bad thing.

We’ve seen what has happened to manufacturing jobs. They’re down from about 18 million to about 12 million over the last 40 or so years. No matter what President Trump says those jobs are not coming back.

Meanwhile, service jobs are up from about 40 million to over 100 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This much larger part of the workforce includes not just jobs, such as checkout clerk […]

Deliveroo riders holding a protest over pay outside the company HQ in London. Could protests like this become more common as our economic model grows increasingly unstable? POLITICS and economics have been going through rapid evolutionary change in the last few years. Future historians may refer to it as a revolution. Political and economic thinking are deeply intertwined and while the economic order of our lifetime has failed and shows no sign of recovery, our politicians have failed to realise the new reality and are still arguing in terms of left and right, because that’s all they understand.

Unconditional Basic Income and Health

Unconditional Basic Income and Health

> 1. What are the health-related effects of not having basic income? QUESTION:

2. TREATING SYMPTOMS INSTEAD OF ROOTS • “I was treating their bodies, but not their social situations. And especially not their income, which seemed to be the biggest barrier to their health improving. The research evidence was pretty clear on this. Income, poverty, is intimately connected to my patients’ health. In fact, poverty is more important to my low-income patients than smoking, high cholesterol, high- blood pressure, obesity, salt, or soda. Poverty wreaks havoc on my patients’ bodies. A 17% increased risk of heart disease; […]
