Finland’s biggest trade union says a universal basic income is ‘useless’

LONDON — Finland’s experiment with a universal basic income is unworkable and unaffordable, according to the country’s biggest trade union.

Since January, Finland’s government has paid a group of 2,000 unemployed Finns aged between 25 and 58 with a monthly stipend of £480 ($600), as it considers a radical new welfare system.

Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday signalled that the government had not ruled out implementation of universal basic income but acknowledged that it could not happen until the existing subsidy regime was overhauled.

Replying to a debate on the budget in the Lok Sabha, Jaitley said the concept of a universal basic income had found mention in the budget speech of Jammu and Kashmir finance minister Haseeb Drabu.
