Biggest basic income experiment slated for East Africa

GITURA MWAURA Given the interest it has generated worldwide, it is certain the idea of Universal Basic Income (UBI) has gained some traction, promising a more practical solution to address poverty and inequality.

UBI assures every person – the employed and unemployed, the rich and poor – a small income to cover basic living costs and no questions asked.

Anthropologist James Ferguson, in his book Give a Man a Fish: Reflections on the New Politics of Distribution , captures it best. As the title of the book suggests, he turns around the compelling Chinese proverb, “Give a man a fish and […]

Universal Basic Income: eBay Founder Gives $500,000 To Project In Kenya

The American workforce is going to change dramatically as robots and automation continue to take the place of humans. To combat that, eBay founder Pierre Omidyar has pledged nearly half a million dollars to test a universal basic income program.

The cash will come from the Omidyar Network, the tech mogul’s philanthropic investment firm and be doled out to people living in Kenya through a program called GiveDirectly. The money will be used to run a 12-year pilot program to test the feasibility of universal basic income.

Through the program, a group of 6,000 Kenyan citizens will be granted regular stipends […]

Basic Income Trial Useless, Finland's Largest Union Says

A month into Finland’s experiment with a basic income, the idea is taking criticism from an unexpected source: The country’s largest labour union.

"We think it takes social policy in the wrong direction,” Ilkka Kaukoranta, chief economist at the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK), told Bloomberg . The union’s membership of 1 million includes more than one out of every five people in Finland.

But supporters of a basic income say unions are simply afraid of losing membership, should the idea be implemented. Pedestrians crossing a street in Helsinki, Finland. The country’s government is running two-year a trial of […]

States interested in discussing universal basic income, says Jaitley

Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said he was pleasantly surprised by the interest shown by some states in the universal basic income, which the Economic Survey has proposed as an alternative to the existing regime of subsidies and welfare schemes.

Earlier, Jaitley had said while universal basic income was a good idea, it was somewhat futuristic and needed a mature political debate. “I think UBI is an idea worth considering. One of the chief ministers met me today and said he is willing to start a pilot project in his state to roll out universal basic income,” Jaitley said […]

FRANCE: French minister Ségolène Royal backs Hamon’s basic income proposal

The French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy, Ségolène Royal, has expressed some support for Socialist candidate Benoît Hamon’s basic income proposal, and noted that the idea has been “unjustly caricatured”.

As recently covered by Basic Income News, Hamon’s proposal involves introducing an unconditional basic income of 600 euro per month for young people in 2018, before eventually rolling out to all citizens and increasing to 750 euro per month.

In a television interview for France 3, Royal had the following to say: “I find that this idea has been unjustly characterised. Eminent economists have shown that it’s not about […]

Not everyone likes the idea of basic income – Finland’s largest trade union is dead set against it

The world is watching as Finland’s basic income experiment proceeds. For another two years 2,000 unemployed Finns will receive EUR 560 per month with no strings attached, to answer the age-old question (or at least as old as the 60’s) of whether scrapping the paperwork and adopting universal basic income could be an alternative to the classic welfare system’s complex distribution of financial support.

Finland’s largest trade union – the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions, SAK – has declared that the experiment will not shake its conviction that basic income is ‘unworkable, uneconomical and ultimately useless’, as Bloomberg writes […]

India stands out as the only economy doing reforms: Jaitley

New Delhi, Feb 9:

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday said that in the global scenario where economies were turning protectionist, India stands out as the only economy doing reforms. “We stand out as the only economy doing reforms because the rest are going towards protectionism,” Jaitley said here at the 96th annual session of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham).

Ebay founder backs universal basic income test with $500,000 pledge

Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar is the latest tech bigwig to get behind the concept. His philanthropic investment firm, the Omidyar Network, announced Wednesday that it will give nearly half a billion dollars to a group testing the policy in Kenya.

Universal basic income is the notion that a government should guarantee every citizen a yearly sum of money, no strings attached. The thinking is that such a program would relieve economic stress as automation technology severely reduces the demand for labor.

Theories along these lines have existed for centuries, but their proponents have never had much luck convincing governments to give […]
