Quad-Cities population loss is a decades-old problem that lacks a single cause, or solution

Since 1990, the Quad-Cities metro area has lost 5,400 manufacturing jobs, or about a fifth of the manufacturing jobs that existed in 1990, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Nationally, manufacturing has been hit even harder. Since 2000, U.S. manufacturing employment has dropped 27%, according to BLS data . And though recent months have been better for manufacturing, the industry still lags behind its heyday.
