A rather sarcastic New Yorker article recently explored whether a mass replacement of human labor with automation would lead to an employment apocalypse — when it has failed to do so many times before. I have some issues with the historical reasoning process used to marginalize the idea, as historical precedent isn’t great for predicting wholly novel outcomes. But the topic is a good one. And indeed, Democratic candidate Andrew Yang cites the data he’s seen on mass labor displacement due to automation as a major impetus for his presidential run.
