The devil’s in the details is a common saying about policy proposals . Perhaps we need a similar saying for policy research , something like the devil’s in the caveats . I say this both because nonspecialists (the citizens and policymakers who are ultimately responsible for evaluating policy in any democracy) have great difficulty understanding what research implies about policy and because specialists often have difficulty understanding what citizens and policymakers most hope to learn from policy research.

So #salarytransparency was a minor trending topic on Twitter and LinkedIn recently (although I didn’t see anything on Facebook). I mean, race itself was created by Europeans to further class divides amongst non-African servants and African slaves. We just have to look at Bacon’s Rebellion to see that. So what you’re saying has much value and is important. For the US it’s a much more complex issue than in different parts of the world where working class revolutionaries work and organize today. Driving out of Helsinki, past frozen lakes and mountains, I travelled to the far west of Finland to meet a man involved in a trial scheme to give unemployed people a basic income every month.

Four local authorities in Scotland are looking at similar plans to pilot a universal basic income, so for BBC 5 live I went to meet some people taking part in a similar pilot project which is well under way.
