Watch Live: Will Universal Basic Income Change Our Lives for Good or Bad?

Each year, robots and artificially intelligence systems cause unemployment rates to increase as more and more jobs become automated. And when you stop to take a look, the numbers are harrowing.

In Canada, a study conducted by the Brookfield Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship found that a staggering 40 percent of Canadian jobs will be taken over by machines in the next few decades. In the United Kingdom, a study conducted by Oxford University and Deloitte, a business advisory firm, found that 850,000 public sector jobs in the region will likely be lost by 2030. In Southeast Asia, an estimated […]

Pilot project to introduce a basic income in Ontario gets strong public support

Pilot project to introduce a basic income in Ontario gets strong public support

Three-year proposal is set to launch this spring and will give participants a guaranteed salary. Toronto’s Pauline Bryant, who has been active in the fight to get Ontario to raise welfare rates, says a three-year pilot project to study guaranteed income does nothing for people who need help now. A proposed provincial pilot project to replace Ontario’s poverty-level welfare payments and top-up low-wage workers with a no-strings-attached basic income received a thumbs-up during recent online and public consultations.

Ontarians are also keen to know whether this type of support would impact health, housing, food and work habits, according to a […]

With precarious work and a less secure middle class, basic income can help

Roderick Benns. It is now a global phenomenon that Canada is caught up in. According to the International Labour Organization, about 75 percent of the world’s workforce is precarious in some way –part-time, temporary jobs are the vast majority. That means, of course, that only 25 percent of the world’s population is doing stable, full-time work.

For a made-in-Canada example, the Toronto Star has reported research findings from McMaster University and the United Way that show the Greater Toronto Area has more than 52 per cent of workers in temporary, contract, or part-time positions.

There are all kinds of reasons for […]

You Deserve a Universal Basic Income Regardless of Your Work

image from gawker Are you a robot?
Probably not, but take a test: look around your place of work. How many of your co-workers are actual people – as opposed to virtual people you only ever meet via email, co-working platforms and an occasional conference call?

The machines are taking over the world. Fine, I made that sound scarier than it probably is; after all robotization is not a new or exceptional situation – jobs have always been lost to technology, what is new is that jobs long deemed secure are now eyed by robots . Not any old jobs, […]

Guy Caron Says He Can Bring Economic Cred to the NDP

Guy Caron Says He Can Bring Economic Cred to the NDP

‘People are actually confident I know what I’m doing,’ says NDP leadership hopeful Guy Caron. The last economist to be elected prime minister was Stephen Harper, but New Democrat leadership hopeful Guy Caron says that shouldn’t put people off his campaign bid.

He sees his profession as an advantage.

Caron is in favour of free trade, as long human rights are part of agreements and Canadians get a good deal. He also chides the Liberal government for poor economic growth.A New Democrat lecturing Ottawa opponents on the economy may seem like a tough sell, but Caron said party affiliation has nothing […]

Is a Universal Basic Income a Good Idea?

Is a Universal Basic Income a Good Idea?

What if everyone on the planet received a guaranteed income whether or not they worked?

That’s the idea behind the universal basic income (UBI) — and it is gaining ground globally. Government officials, some technology executives, philanthropists and academics from every continent are championing the idea as a way to combat rising wealth inequality and provide an income floor as new technologies are seen decimating jobs in the future. However, the program’s effectiveness and affordability are far from settled discussions. Political hurdles must also be overcome for it to become reality.

This year, UBI was a hot topic at the World […]
