With precarious work and a less secure middle class, basic income can help

Roderick Benns. It is now a global phenomenon that Canada is caught up in. According to the International Labour Organization, about 75 percent of the world’s workforce is precarious in some way –part-time, temporary jobs are the vast majority. That means, of course, that only 25 percent of the world’s population is doing stable, full-time work.

For a made-in-Canada example, the Toronto Star has reported research findings from McMaster University and the United Way that show the Greater Toronto Area has more than 52 per cent of workers in temporary, contract, or part-time positions.
