Recently this idea has become hugely popular amongst the 21st century ‘New Left.’ An idea that every adult citizen should have enough money to live on regardless of whether they work or not.
Now, I completely understand where this idea is coming from. The current welfare state (especially in Britain) is completely corrupt and cruel to it’s recipients. Often under capitalism, especially in times of crisis, one cannot find work, so to be punished for it through benefit sanctions, etc, is an absolute outrage.
I still feel however, that the UBI is a reformist policy, fundamentally adapting to the free market […]
