Money with no strings attached experiment. Will people overcome their condition or wil remain trapped in poverty?

Finland and Canada started this year with a great purpose – to find out how poor people will react if they receive a basic income. Would they overcome their condition and begin to contribute to the society or will remain in the poverty, encouraged by a guaranteed sum of money? This experiment is very important if we consider the transformation of the global workforce, which is more and more affected by automatization. Money with no strings attached or, in other words, money for nothing may have the power to change the people who receive them or could worsen the […]

There’s Nothing Universal or Basic About Universal Basic Income in India

Universal Basic Income is only an idea in the making, but within its first year of conceptualisation, it seems like the first two terms of the acronym have already been reduced to notional ideas.

Problems have cropped up in conceptualising Universal Basic Income. Credit: Reuters/Rupak De Chowdhuri/Files A chapter in this year’s Economic Survey titled ‘Universal Basic Income: A Conversation With and Within the Mahatma’ in the Economic Survey of 2016-17, engages at length with the concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI). Although UBI has not been realised in this year’s budget, its place in the Survey […]

Union Budget, 2017 Union Budget, demonetisation, Narendra Modi government, Modi, Budget week, Economic Survey, MGNREGA, Universal Basic Income, poverty, India news, Indian Express Having got to the second half of its tenure, the government is beginning to flex its reformist muscles. Two more radical proposals have been delivered during Budget week. First was the idea floated in the Budget of reforming the funding of political parties. Like demonetisation, it makes cash an outlaw but cheques and bonds respectable. That will be subject to much debate but it is about politicians, not people.

The Economic Survey has proposed a radical step, […]

Re: Unconditional basic income by the texpayer’s money

I found an article about that interesting topic (link below) which also says:
The basic income was popularized by the economist Milton Friedman in the 1960s as a "negative income tax" but is picking up steam in several countries — Canada, India and the Netherlands — and in Silicon Valley. The Dutch city of Utrecht is in the process of a pilot project on basic income, and seven other cities in the country have announced their intention to explore the idea, which has been discussed in the Netherlands since the 1970s.

In November, Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk […]

Basic Income Basically Begrudged?

Is there any evidence that redistribution, as in Finland, is less politically sustainable than any other system of reducing inequality ? (the only other successful capitalist system of reducing inequality that I am aware of is Japan’s).

Is there any evidence that any type of political economy is 100% sustainable and stable? If work programs are 100% politically sustainable, then why did Henry Wallace fail in his attempt to make the WPA permanent? Why was the Jefe program defeated?

Was Kalecki wrong about why full employment programs are politically unsustainable?Re:"earnings." What does it mean when we say that someone "earned" something?Nobody […]

Job insecurity and technology have created a ‘crisis of meaning’ in today’s workplace

Academics believe there will be massive job losses as automation takes over more and more human roles. Imagine further you’re an ordinary bank teller who has seen your traditional responsibilities taken over by machines: ATMs, online portals and phone apps. Now imagine that your sector will lose another 30 per cent of […]

MPP says well-designed basic income could result in better care of aging parents

MPP says well-designed basic income could result in better care of aging parents

Ontario MPP, France Gélinas, says a well-designed basic income policy could help women stay home if they want to take care of their aging parents.

Gélinas, an MPP with Ontario’s New Democratic Party (NDP) and a health critic for her party, says women in the 50-65 age bracket often find themselves in the difficult position of placing their mother or father in a long term care home.

“Many women – and let’s be honest, it’s mostly women who would choose this – would love to stay home and take care of their moms and dads,” says Gélinas.“If they had a basic […]

Photo courtesy of Enno Schmidt German artist and filmmaker Enno Schmidt’s whirlwind tour of the nation will take him to Duluth Sunday afternoon, where he will once again promote the idea of providing a guaranteed paycheck to every man, woman and child.
