AI Will Enhance Your Job, Not Take It

AI Will Enhance Your Job, Not Take It

Leon Gordon is a leader in data analytics, a current Microsoft MVP based in the U.K. and a CEO at Onyx Data . getty Artificial intelligence could take as many as 300 million full-time jobs by 2035. If you’re worried AI might put your position on the automation chopping block, you are not alone. More than half of American workers are concerned they could lose their jobs to AI.

But are these fears and predictions well founded? As an expert in data analytics and AI, I disagree with the warnings of impending employment doom. I think that AI is going […]

Guaranteed basic income provide safety net in Somervile

Last month Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne announced that the city will be joining a coalition of cities experimenting with a guaranteed basic income by giving 200 families at risk of homelessness $750 a month for a year. “We’re trying to use any tool possible to help these families become stable,” the mayor said in an interview. Her office worked with the public schools and local social service agencies to identify the residents in need, part of the city’s comprehensive effort to offer financial literacy, rental vouchers, and other measures to keep vulnerable Somerville residents in their homes.

AI to the rescue of SA’s floundering manufacturing sector

AI to the rescue of SA’s floundering manufacturing sector

Smart utilisation of artificial intelligence (AI) could go a long way towards the resuscitation of large sections of South Africa’s moribund manufacturing sector. By using advanced AI to boost human productivity (instead of focusing on mechanisation and digitisation), the manufacturing industry can capitalise on South Africa’s unique intersection of technology and labour availability, improving the sector, the economy – and returning to being highly competitive in the global market.

That’s the view of Peter Reid, CEO at visionAI, who emphasises that the kind of AI needed does not necessarily involve automation with the potential this holds for job losses.

In Somerville, guaranteed basic income provides a safety net

In Somerville, guaranteed basic income provides a safety net

By some measures, Massachusetts has the dismal distinction of being the most expensive state in the country in which to live and raise a family. We all know the litany: the cost of housing, health care, utilities, and child care is too damn high. Even a subsistence living wage — with nothing left over for savings or the smallest luxuries — is beyond the reach of many families. In 2023, family homelessness in Massachusetts increased 29 percent over the previous year, one of the largest spikes in the nation. All of the opulent condo developments and lavish spending so […]

Why Annuities Belong In Clients’ Retirement Income Plans

I drive a Chevy Volt, frequent public transportation and bike to work when the weather allows.

I’m conservative in my spending and investing and relatively immune to fads. I won’t be baited into paying extra fees for goods or services when I don’t think they’re worth the cost.

So readers may find it surprising that I agree with ardent annuity advocates that guaranteed income products hold a rightful place in many clients’ retirement plans. The marketplace seems to agree: Witness the boom in annuity sales over the past two years. Retirement Income Planning Is Not For DIYers According to the […]

Tavneet Suri on Universal Basic Income

Tavneet Suri on Universal Basic Income

Social Science Bites podcast artwork Here’s a thought experiment: You want to spend a reasonably large sum of money providing assistance to a group of people with limited means. There’s a lot of ways you might do that with a lot of strings and safeguards involved, but what about just giving them money — "get cash directly into the hands of the poor in the cheapest, most efficient way possible." You and I might prefer that, since we, of course, are reputable people and good stewards and understand our own particular needs. But what about, well, others?

Chicago Mayor Relaunching Guaranteed Basic Income Program

In 2023, thousands of Chicago families participated in the program; several individuals indicated to WEBZ and the Chicago Sun Times that they wished the program had lasted for longer.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is relaunching the city’s guaranteed basic income program (GBI) to exhaust $374 million in federal money earmarked for community projects. Although it appears the city has been slow in spending this money since 2021, the popular program should help them spend it by the 2026 deadline.

It is important to the Johnson administration that the money is spent, and according to Mayor Johnson’s Budget Director Annette Guzman, “The […]
