Actors, teachers, therapists – think your job is safe from robots? Think again

Actors, teachers, therapists – think your job is safe from robots? Think again

In the battle for the 21st century workplace, computers are winning. And the odds of us puny humans making a comeback are not very good.

A January 2017 report from the McKinsey Global Institute estimated that roughly half of today’s work activities could be automated by 2055, give or take 20 years. (McKinsey helpfully offers a search portal to find out how likely you’ll be given the boot by a bot.)

Bottom line is robots want our jobs. And no one is going to build a wall around them or tariff them out of existence. In a way this is nothing new. […]

Intel is hiring American workers to make high-tech chips that could displace American workers

Intel is building a $7 billion manufacturing plant in Arizona that will create “3,000 high-paying, high-wage, high-tech jobs,” CEO Brian Krzanich announced after a meeting with US president Donald Trump on Tuesday. “The people of Arizona will be very happy,” Trump said. “It’s a lot of jobs.”

Trump made “bringing back jobs” a central theme in his campaign, and he has continued to emphasize it in the early days of his presidency. Last month, for instance, the president that he would use taxes and other penalties to punish American companies who move manufacturing jobs abroad.

In that context, there’s something a […]

Why Donald Trump Will Make the Case for Universal Basic Income (inverse.com)

Yes, really. Camilo Cardenas

The problem with the fourth industrial revolution and basic income. Work give purpose and direction to human lives, the advent of basic income, and the fourth industrial revolution, will hurt the not only work but capitalism as we know it; one hypotesis is that ,it will morph into a socialism-semicapitalist econonomy with middle age caratheristic interations among those who produce services and raw materials, and those pay for it with work and invisible means. the result usually will lead to uprising in unions and chaos in the big cities. because greed and selfisheness will inevitably, destroy […]

India doesn’t need Universal Basic Income but economic reforms

India doesn't need Universal Basic Income but economic reforms

One of the more fundamental challenges while formulating an economic policy is (apart from what the actual policy should be) to time the policy right. In other words, it means that before the policy is proposed, the underlying situation of the economy is determined, its social and political effects calculated, its necessity and priority estimated.

The timing, therefore, is astonishingly critical and its effects are severely underestimated, which is why, the idea of introducing or even discussing Universal Basic Income (UBI) in India at this stage is extremely flawed and only caters to stimulate the intellectual fantasies of certain individuals […]

Economic advisory council delivers Bill Morneau an odd report: Walkom

Hamilton Spectator

The latest report from Ottawa’s Advisory Council on Economic Growth is an odd document. It foresees a world in which almost half of Canadians will have lost their jobs to automation. Yet it spends much effort trying to figure out how to encourage more workers to compete for this diminishing number of jobs.

Like the council’s first report in October, this one walks a fine line between market economics and activist government. It wants private capitalists to lead the way but it also wants government to both guide and backstop their efforts. In that sense it hearkens back to the Asian […]

Donald Trump’s (Potential) Case For Universal Basic Income

Donald Trump's (Potential) Case For Universal Basic Income

The idea of universal basic income was largely ignored by Americans for forty years before it started to get traction again as a byproduct of conversations about automation and the end of the traditional manufacturing sector. Bernie Sanders popularized the pseudo-policy proposal in 2016, rallying supporters around the idea of an American social democracy. He didn’t win the primary. Which is not to say that the notion of paying citizens for being citizens is a wholly radical idea. Liberals have traditionally championed Social Security and Medicare, entitlement programs that offer state benefits to citizens in return for nothing. (Well, […]

Universal basic income offers solution to future automation

Universal basic income offers solution to future automation

Automation of thousands of jobs will eventually cause an epidemic of unemployment. We must brace for this future now and take the steps necessary to prevent it.

Universal basic income is the most obvious solution to this problem. The idea of guaranteeing a certain income for every member of a society isn’t a new one. Bertrand Russell floated the idea in 1918 , and numerous other intellectuals have endorsed it since. Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman sees it as the only possible solution to America’s growing inequality.

Of course, UBI has a massive hill to climb — the American primal hostility […]
