Automation Technology Will Put 6 To 7.5 Million Jobs In Peril

Automation Technology Will Put 6 To 7.5 Million Jobs In Peril

Technological unemployment is already affecting the prodigious sectors that contribute majorly to the economy. By now, we know that automation can lead to temporary and permanent unemployment in predominantly profitable sectors. The most significant aspect of automation technology powering every industry is due to precise and efficient output. A recent study notes that 4 out of 10 jobs globally would be lost by 2021 due to the growing adoption of automation in every sector. Automation technology and robots already cost millions of jobs in every economy, and Cornerstone capital survey says that this is not just it.

According to a […]

What and where are the jobs of the future?

What and where are the jobs of the future?

Joe Schoendorf used to make a list of all the jobs that he thought were going to disappear. When that got too long, he switched to making a list of jobs that would not be obliterated by changes in technology, in accelerating automation and artificial intelligence.

That list, he says, is very short. And getting shorter. This worries him deeply – especially when he sees such trends combined with the fundamental deterioration in school education standards in the US, especially in subjects like mathematics.

Schoendorf is not alone in his concern about the jobs of the future. What makes it more […]

Tax wealth and consumption rather than income: automation is killing jobs

, by Alan Kohler. Underemployment has been rising steadily for 40 years and is now the highest it has ever been. And it’s a global trend — not confined to Australia. This is why real wages are now falling, which is to say that average wage growth is below the rate of inflation (1.9 per cent versus 2.1 per cent). … The economics profession is struggling to account for this, and officialdom isn’t even trying. … Automation is creating a steady tide of unemployment: Here’s a guess about what’s going on: in thousands of ways, every day, technology and […]

Work In Retail? There’s A Robot Getting Ready To Take Your Job

Work In Retail? There’s A Robot Getting Ready To Take Your Job

As retailers install self-checkout systems, proximity beacons that flash offers to shoppers’ phones, and invest in robots that replenish shelves, they’re likely to need fewer and fewer workers in the coming decade. A new analysis finds that up to 7.5 million jobs are at risk in U.S. retail, with women and rural areas particularly affected.

The last two years has seen a string of retail bankruptcies and store closures, with once storied names like J.C. Penney, RadioShack, Macy’s, and Sears under pressure as never before. Now analysts say retailers are likely to turn to automation as they try to end […]

PHOENIX – Each day, workers at Abby Lee Farms walk down the aisles – sometimes on stilts – to inspect, prune and hand pick tomatoes on the 3-acre, indoor facility in Phoenix.

Each tomato gets physically touched by one of the 12 workers at least once, sometimes two or three times, a week, general manager Matt Sanchez said. These employees also decide if it’s too hot or too cold […]

UAE jobs: Mind the (skills) gap

UAE jobs: Mind the (skills) gap

Experts across the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region have stressed the importance of properly utilising today’s young workforce, especially as the region prepares to tackle the challenges stemming from the fourth industrial revolution.

The Mena region is endowed with a young, growing, and increasingly well-educated population, which, if skilled for tomorrow’s jobs and offered new and productive employment opportunities, has the potential to significantly enhance the region’s growth. Across the region, high-skilled employment stands at 21 per cent on average, while middle-skilled roles account for 66 per cent of all formal sector jobs. It was found that the […]

Study: Automation puts millions of U.S. retail jobs at risk

Study: Automation puts millions of U.S. retail jobs at risk

Automation may be mission-critical to operational longevity in the retail industry, but it could be creating a significant pool of “stranded workers.”

Six million to 7.5 million retail jobs likely will be automated out of existence in the coming years, leaving a large portion of the retail workforce at risk of becoming “stranded workers.” Retail cashiers are at highest risk for automation technologies, and women hold 73% of these positions.

That’s according to a new report, “Retail Automation: Stranded Workers? Opportunities and Risks for Labor and Automation,” conducted by Cornerstone Capital Group and commissioned by the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute. […]

The global average is around 0.66, but as this number grows the cost of implementing robot workers shrinks, making them a viable and cheaper alternative to human workers.According […]

In the age of automation will jobs really matter?

In the age of automation will jobs really matter?

James Mabbott, Partner, Head of KPMG Innovate It’s time to change the conversation around the jobs of the future.

In 2013 Oxford University published a paper “The future of employment: how susceptible are jobs to computerisation?” that estimates that 47 percent of jobs in the US are at risk. In 2015 CEDA published the paper, Australia’s future workforce? arguing that five million jobs or almost 40 percent of jobs that exist today are at risk of disappearing in the next ten to fifteen years. And just recently CSIRO’s Adrian Turner echoed the 40 percent figure in a keynote speech before […]

Why robots and AI won’t replace most jobs any time soon

Why robots and AI won't replace most jobs any time soon

Image: iStockphoto/bestdesigns The machines may be coming for your job, but they’re sure not very good at it. As Nick Carr put it , "You can see the robot age everywhere but in the labor statistics." In fact, even as the market has gone frothy over machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), the US has registered its 86th straight month of increased employment. It’s possible that machines will eradicate some lower-skilled jobs (with an English degree serving as inoculation ) but, on balance, the evidence for a robot takeover is missing in action. The data doesn’t favor robots […]
