Robots and Artificial Intelligence will take your job

Robots and Artificial Intelligence will take your job

Since the first industrial revolution, there has been a recurrent fear that technology advancements will displace humans from their jobs even though they also give room for new jobs that require new skills.

In 1589, Queen Elizabeth I reportedly refused to grant the inventor of a mechanical knitting machine a patent for fear of putting manual knitters out of work. When the knitting machine was eventually invented, it provided jobs for operators and technicians.

Currently, especially in the wake of the fourth industrial revolution, futurists have projected a future where artificial intelligence (AI) will replace many jobs. A 2017 study by […]

Brookings survey finds worries over AI impact on jobs and personal privacy, concern U.S. will fall behind China

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are propelling development in many parts of the world. There are new applications in finance, healthcare, transportation, national security, criminal justice, and smart cities, among other areas . Yet as the same time, there are questions about negative impacts on jobs and personal privacy , if AI will make people’s lives easier, whether the government should regulate AI, and how the United States is faring compared to other countries.

To examine attitudes towards AI, researchers at the Brookings Institution undertook an online national survey of 1,535 adult Internet users between May 9 and May 11, […]

The Changing Nature of Work

The Changing Nature of Work

The world of work has experienced major changes in the last two decades. Learn how globalization and automation have led to the unbundling of industries and the nature of work and jobs.

The world of work has changed dramatically due to the forces of automation and globalization. The focus of job mechanization and global job distribution is economy and efficiency. In addition, work of all kinds is now being unbundled.

Unbundling refers to separating the various components of work into distinct parts completed in different ways and even in different places. This is nothing new. Until the Industrial Revolution, people […]

Confronting a smoothie-making robot

Confronting a smoothie-making robot

(Melissa Holman/Getty) Face to face with a robot that could destroy millions of jobs, I pondered: Be this angelbot or devilbot?

The vision of the future changes from decade to decade, but some predictions have remained static for generations. Case in point: robots. Early 20th-century writers like L. Frank Baum and Ambrose Bierce predicted their rise, and they are still seen as an inevitable part of the future.

So when I received an invitation to view “the world’s first fully autonomous robotic [smoothie] station,” I cleared my schedule. I wanted to see — and taste — the future. The company […]

Robots, Employment And The Mis-Measurement Of Productivity

Robots, Employment And The Mis-Measurement Of Productivity

‘I am convinced that the substitution of machinery for human labour is often very injurious to the interests of the class of labourers’. While Marx, writing only a few decades later, envisaged a time when man would be enabled to: – ‘…to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner… without ever becoming hunter, fisherman, herdsman or critic.’ As for Keynes essay on the, ‘Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren’, his optimism is laudable if laughable – 15-hour working week anyone?

The paranoia continues, nonetheless – The Economist – A study finds nearly […]

Real automation bias

Real automation bias

So I quickly read an email summary of a paper where researchers from Ball State and Villanova universities suggested that the fear of automation could be affecting workers’ physical and mental health .

Really? Maybe it’s because I’m a Purdue University graduate, but I think, if you just change the words “robot” and “automation” in the study to any one of about a thousand different things, you would get the same results. I’m biased, right?

It kind of reminds me of the fake emails many used to get that sounded real and appeared to be written by an important official, so […]

Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Way We Work [Infographic]

Artificial Intelligence Is Changing The Way We Work [Infographic]

The nature of work is changing. From the introduction of industrial robots, to the growth of artificial intelligence, more jobs are disappearing or being taken over by technology. How will your business be affected?

Robotics have been slowly taking over jobs in industrial manufacturing for years. In the 1990s, there was less than one industrial robot for each one thousand workers. By the 2000s, there were more than two-and-a-half. It’s no surprise that robots are appealing to manufacturers, with 1 robot doing the work of nearly 6 people, robotics are a great way to cut operating costs.

Overtime, the value of […]
