Dole official urges agriculture workers to shift to manufacturing

AN OFFICIAL of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) urged workers in the agriculture sector to consider shifting to the manufacturing industry, saying that the next industrial revolution is already near.

In an interview, Dole Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) Director, Dominique Tutay, said it would be better if agricultural workers would start changing their mindset towards work.

"There may already be a need to transition from agricultural to manufacturing by using the agri-business concept and high value chains," said Tutay. She said such a shift is necessary as the agricultural sector is projected to have the highest probability of automation […]

Reshoring Results In Higher Levels Of Automation

Reshoring Results In Higher Levels Of Automation

One of the central policy pledges made by Donald Trump was to reshore jobs that had previously moved overseas. Skepticism about his claims existed however, not least due to concerns that whilst work may return to the United States, the work would be done by machines rather than people.

A recent study from Georg-August-Universitat Gottingen set out to explore whether reshored jobs were taken by humans or machines via a new measure of reshoring at the macroeconomic level.

The analysis found that high levels of automation in a country were positively associated with attempts to reshore production that had previously been […]

Buy now, pay later: AI and the ‘red-light risk' for millions of Australian jobs

If you are ever worried about slipping over at the Woolworths store in Gregory Hills, south-west of Sydney, Greggles has got your back. Greggles is a test safety robot that patrols the store and scans floors for slip hazards.

It’s just a trial, and a simple task for a robot to complete, but the rapid pace of technological advancement in AI, robotics and automation is both a benefit – and a threat – to employment.

The future seems to be AI driven, but at the cost of ethical and technical issues

Artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications has taken the world by storm. From China’s robot waiters to Elon Musk’s flying Tesla , the hype is undying around this technology, which uses algorithms to mimic human intelligence.

With the potential to eliminate inefficiencies evolving from human error, AI has the ability to add around $13 trillion in economic output by 2030, or 1.2 percent of the global GDP a year, as per a report by Mckinsey .

The application of AI ranges across a large spectrum which the report has categorised across five areas: computer vision, natural language, virtual assistants, robotic process […]

What Andrew Yang Gets Wrong (and Right) About Robots

What Andrew Yang Gets Wrong (and Right) About Robots

Robots will not replace us. Every Democrat on the debate stage in Detroit Wednesday night argued that America is enmeshed in some kind of crisis. But while plenty of candidates attributed our civic emergency to a warming climate, or racist president, or extractive economic elite, only Andrew Yang cast automation as the one true enemy of the people.

In the entrepreneur’s telling, advances in robotics, software, and artificial intelligence are replacing the need for human labor at such a rapid pace, they could condemn one-third of all American workers to “permanent unemployment” within the next decade ( and this time, […]

New Hampshire holds steady B+ in manufacturing study

Ball State report highlights state’s advantages in New England

In an annual comparison study of all 50 states, New Hampshire held steady with a B+ in manufacturing sector health as well as seeing improvement in several categories.

Ironically, the only category where the state slipped was its tax climate — a topic of much debate lately, as the Legislature and governor disagree whether tax cuts passed in a previous session should continue or not. New Hampshire fell from a C to a C- in that category.“There’s an awful lot of tax competition out there, and you as a particular state […]

The rise of automated workers: Part 1 – should we be worried?

The rise of automated workers: Part 1 - should we be worried?

Jasmine Patel and Jessica Hunt from the employment and discrimination team discuss the rise of automated workers and what it means for employment in this two-part blog series.

Throughout history humans have sought to create machines which make their life easier and less time consuming; from the Romans inventing aqueducts to the self-driving car. We seem to have an almost insatiable appetite to progress and make changes to the way we work and live.

Perhaps the most successful period for automation in modern history was the Industrial Revolution. This was an era which saw the invention of the steam engine, the […]

Americans find high value in STEM careers, digitalization

Americans find high value in STEM careers, digitalization

The Randstad Workmonitor survey has revealed that 68% of American workers would choose a field of study focused on science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM).

"Employees understand the value of STEM talent today; they see their employers on the hunt for that talent and how in demand STEM skills are in the modern workforce," Graig Paglieri, group president, of Randstad Technologies and Engineering, said. "The survey endings don’t necessarily mean people in non-STEM roles have career regret or think their jobs will be taken over by automation and robots. However, it’s clear most people think having at least some […]
