How HR teams can drive the AI revolution

How HR teams can drive the AI revolution

The HR industry doesn’t need much convincing when it comes to the extent at which technology can overhaul almost every aspect of their work.

From hiring, training, feedback, and payroll, among the many other strings on their bow, 87 percent of HR professionals believe that digital technologies will “fundamentally change” their work according to consulting firm Bain. Well over half, meanwhile, plan to up IT budgets by between 1 and 10 percent within the next two years.

But attitudes aren’t action and old habits die hard. The same survey found that up to 31 percent of HR departments are still reliant […]

Up to 2.4M Manufacturing Jobs May Go Unfilled by 2028, Study Says

By Bill Koenig As many as 2.4 million manufacturing jobs may go unfilled by 2028, putting $454 billion in production at risk, consulting company Deloitte (New York) said.

A lack of skills and “impending retirements” of current workers “suggest the industry could experience employment bottlenecks,” the consulting company said in a report done with the Manufacturing Institute.

The report was based on a survey of 400 U.S. manufacturers. That was supplemented with executive interviews, analysis of data and economic forecasts. The report lists five authors, five from Deloitte, one from the National Association of Manufacturers, parent organization of the Manufacturing Institute.Manufacturing […]

Cognizant debuts new work index: Jobs of the future grew 37% in a year

The Cognizant Center for the Future of Work announced Wednesday it has debuted a new index which provides insights into what jobs of the future will be and how they will evolve.

The Cognizant Jobs of the Future Index measures the changes in demand of 50 occupations (45 actual jobs and five proxy jobs) by examining the volume and velocity of new work that emerges “as artificial intelligence, automation and other next generation digital technologies take a greater foothold in the workplace.”

Cognizant partnered with ESI ThoughtLab , an economic research firm, to create the index.“When talking about the future of […]

Is Automation Really Taking All of Our Jobs Away?

Is Automation Really Taking All of Our Jobs Away?

It’s 2018. Technology is advancing exponentially and, as time goes on, becoming more and more integral to our lives. Machines are increasingly doing more work for us, but job creation has simultaneously been rising. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , nonfarm payroll employment increased by 213,000 in June 2018, and job growth occurred across professional and business services, manufacturing, and health care.

How jobs are still being created during technology’s takeover was a topic recently discussed in a TEDx talk with economist David Autor, who breaks down this paradox with two very interesting points:

The O-Ring – What […]

Now the borough council has pledged to work with […]

Inside the New Industrial Revolution

Inside the New Industrial Revolution

Each of these earlier revolutions is easy to measure in hindsight—tons of steel produced, number of automobiles on the road, the proportion of homes with a PC. Since we’re just at the start of this latest transformation, we can only try to find clues to the future by looking at the trends of the past decade, with the rise of the smartphone, the Internet of Things and cloud computing. Pew survey: Only 15% of adults feel youths will be better off than their parents Nearly 90% of Japanese think robots and computers will take over most of the jobs in the next half century. © Reuters TOKYO — The Japanese public is happier about the economy than at any time in nearly two decades, though few think the next generation will have it as good. People’s biggest fear is automation, not foreigners, taking jobs from local workers.

India’s higher education system needs drastic changes to address tech-induced challenges

Nov 13 (IANS): As the world stands on the brink of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, powered by a wide range of new technology breakthroughs such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), advanced robotics, Internet of Things IoT), Cloud computing and 3D printing, major changes are expected in the labour market globally.

There will be reduced demand for middle-skilled workers doing repetitive tasks and increased demand for more highly-skilled workers — and also low-skilled workers doing non-routine work. While many developed countries, such as the US and Japan, as also several European economies, are already experiencing this polarisation, the labour […]

To Yearn for Manufacturing Jobs Is Like Pining for Reincarnation

To Yearn for Manufacturing Jobs Is Like Pining for Reincarnation

President Trump has made it clear that manufacturing jobs matter a lot to him. He is committed to corralling as many as possible to the United States. There are only two problems: Many manufacturing jobs have already been eliminated by efficiencies or are on their way to being eliminated. And the jobs we will need to fill in the future do not depend on tougher national demands or deals. They depend on a constant modernizing economy, and a constant flow of people with the necessary skills to participate in it.

The jobs of the past are not part of our […]

Big issues from the World Economic Forum’s intellectual heart

Big issues from the World Economic Forum’s intellectual heart

I am writing this from deep within the beating intellectual heart of the World Economic Forum — the hub of the Global Future Councils (GFC) in Dubai.

The GFC — labeled the “biggest brainstorm in the world” — takes place each autumn in the UAE as an agenda-setting exercise for the WEF’s big annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. This year, nearly 700 thought leaders — business people, economists, scientists and policymakers of all ages — are gathering to slug out the raw cerebral content that will be discussed in greater depth at Davos. Not many plain old hacks get to […]
