How tech affects women

How tech affects women

There is widespread discussion at present that robots and technology may take away jobs in the apparel sector in Bangladesh as well as in other developing and developed nations across the world.

It is thought that in the labour-intensive world, repetitive tasks previously done by humans can be done in far more efficient, effective way by the machines. Advanced technologies like AI and machine-learning might be able to perform, even the white-collar jobs, better than humans.

Whether technology will threaten jobs across the world or not is a fresh debate. More specifically, it is being discussed that technology upgradation will specifically […]

Karl Marx and the spectre of fascism

Karl Marx and the spectre of fascism

Photo: AFP The 200th birth anniversary of Karl Marx last Saturday has led to a spate of articles about the guru of revolution, many critical, some adulatory. Let us, as Deng Xiaoping exhorted us, seek truth from facts.

Marx was no ivory-tower intellectual, one of his most famous quotes being, “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point however is to change it.” Measured by that yardstick, Marx has been a dismal failure.

Look all around you and you will see the triumph of capitalism, Marx’s lifelong adversary. Regimes that called themselves Marxist have either bitten the […]

What Will Manufacturing Jobs Be Like in 2068?

What Will Manufacturing Jobs Be Like in 2068?

Alan Rooks Editor in Chief One theory I came up with years ago, backed by absolutely no evidence, is that automation and robotics will eventually be so extensive that none of us will have to leave our houses. We will eventually sit around all day, grow roots, and evolve back into the plant life we came from millions of years ago.

Apparently, we’re half way there. According to a recent article on MarketWatch.com , “Half of All Jobs Can Today Be Automated—and Within 50 Years, All of Them Can Be,” by Anna Kook, it is no longer in question whether […]

Former Infosys Chief Sikka Is Working On An AI Venture That Seeks To Expand “Human Creativity”

Former Infosys Chief Vishal Sikka has revealed that he is working on a venture involving artificial intelligence that will use technology to enhance “human creativity”, ET reported .

In a keynote speech given at TiE Inflect conference in Silicon Valley, Sikka, who is publicly known to be passionate about AI, told the audience that there needed to be more education on artificial intelligence as there were currently fewer than 250,000 people who could use machine learning tools.

Following Sikka’s journey during Infosys, it is very easy to notice how AI has played a prominent role in his business plans. While at […]

The Conventional Wisdom on Trade is Wrong Again

The Conventional Wisdom on Trade is Wrong Again

For years, the purveyors of respectable opinion assured us that there was no need to worry about the economic dislocations caused by free trade, because such dislocations would be comparatively minor and temporary. In fact, as Gwynn Guilford notes in an important new article at Quartz , even academic economists are beginning to conclude that imports from China cost up to 2.4 million American manufacturing jobs between 1999 and 2011 and that "offsetting employment gains in other industries never materialized."

Now that they are faced with clear evidence of substantial and long-lasting job losses in the manufacturing sector, the same […]

New technologies are affecting jobs the world over. Is your job safe? Photo – Shutterstock At the 51st annual general meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Manila last week, discussions centred on the advancement of new technologies and the impact robotics and AI would have on local jobs.

In an interview on the sidelines of the event, Sameer Khatiwada, ADB economist at Economic Research and Regional Co-operation Department, told The Myanmar Times that while some jobs will likely be replaced by machines, new functions are also emerging that will require human skills.

Here are some excerpts of the interview, […]

Job losses from automation or trade pacts? Will we learn from this?

A simple request: please don’t turn this into something it is not by making this about supporting our fake pResident.

The Epic Mistake about Manufacturing that’s Cost Americans Millions of Jobs

America’s manufacturing sector is in far worse shape than the media, politicians, and even most academics realize. Manufacturers’ embrace of automation was supposedly a good thing. Sure, some factory workers lost their jobs. But increased productivity boosted living standards, and as manufacturing work vanished, new jobs in construction and other services took its place. This was more of a shift than a loss, explained Bradford DeLong, economics […]

U.S. Unemployment Dips Below 4 Percent For The First Time In More Than 17 Years

AUDIE CORNISH, HOST:

Here’s a line that hasn’t been said in 17 years. The unemployment rate was 3.9 percent last month. Yep, the lowest rate since the year 2000. What’s more, April was the 91st straight month of job gains. But that hasn’t brought along big pay raises. NPR’s John Ydstie is here to tell us why. Welcome to the studio.

JOHN YDSTIE, BYLINE: Hey, Audie.CORNISH: So employers say they can’t find enough workers now, right? And then economists say that when that sort of thing happens, usually, wages are supposed to go up. So what is going on? What’s the […]

ADB advises policies to harness tech for better economic growth

MANILA: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Friday advised regional governments, including Pakistan to introduce policy interventions to harness technologies for better economic growth.

“Government has an important role to play in leveraging technological advances for inclusive growth,” Chief Economist Yasuyuki Sawada at ADB said.

Education and training, favourable labour regulation, social protection and tax policies are imperative for the fourth industrial revolution that is characterised by smart applications integrating virtual and physical production systems, Sawada noted in his presentation titled, ‘Asian Development Outlook 2018: how technology affects jobs’ on the second day of ADB annual meeting. The government is advised to […]

SAINT-ALEXIS, Quebec ― Dairy farmer Pascal Thuot’s cows wander freely in a huge indoor pen. Gone are the days of restraints and enclosures at his farm in Quebec’s Lanaudière region. Milking is done automatically, without human intervention. When cows feel the need to empty their udders, they form a line in front of one of the farmer’s milking robots. When a cow enters the small stall, a computer recognizes it by an electronic chip on its collar and can tell whether the cow has been milked within the past few hours.

Thuot decided […]
