Driverless lorries could mean 600,000 lost jobs. It’s time we took a universal basic income seriously.

With trials for self-driving commercial lorries to take place in the UK within the next twelve months, the work days of thousands of Britain’s long-haul drivers may soon be numbered.

Of course, these are only preliminary tests – it may well be a decade or more before driverless deliveries and long-distance haulage are an everyday reality. However, with the beginnings already upon us, a boom in automated jobs is surely coming sooner rather than later.

Driverless haulage lorries are just the latest in a range of technological upgrades to manual jobs. From driverless taxis , and Amazon’s long-awaited drone deliveries, to […]

Thread: Automation: What Will Happen When All the Jobs Are Gone?

http://nymag.com/scienceofus/2015/06…-are-gone.html
No need to read anymore of this – it’s simple. As automation continues to shrink the job market, people will starve.

For most people, no job means no money, no money means no food. There will never be any basic guaranteed income because the wealthy will not allow it. There is no Star Trek future for humanity. Here’s what will actually happen.
This is going to start when driverless trucks hit the road and 5 million drivers are put out of work in the near future. 100,000 new tech job openings will come from […]

Rise of the robots: In the not-so-distant future, automation could replace fast food workers

Rise of the robots: In the not-so-distant future, automation could replace fast food workers

Provided It may not be long before robots make up the majority of fast food restaurant staffs. And while that may mean faster and more consistent service for customers, it could also put many workers out of a job.

Rising minimum wages across the country and new advances in technology are pushing many fast food companies to look to automation. Wendy’s announced in February it would install self-service kiosks in more than 1,000 locations nationwide to cut labor costs. McDonald’s also announced in June it will install digital ordering kiosks in more than 2,500 of its stores.

Behind the counter, new […]

New Study Suggests Minimum Wage Leads To Automation Of Low-Skill Workers

A new study finds that the fight for a $15 minimum wage could hurt the very workers it is intended to help. Economists Grace Lordan and David Neumark find that "increasing the minimum wage decreases significantly the share of automatable employment held by low-skilled workers, and increases the likelihood that low-skilled workers in automatable jobs become unemployed."

Their findings seem to confirm speculation that the fast food industry, a key industry targeted by minimum wage activists, is responding to wage hikes around the country by replacing cashiers with self-service kiosks and other kinds of robots. Wendy’s, for instance, plans […]

Bringing jobs back — Location

Bringing jobs back — Location

The Mid- Ohio Valley has a lot of economic advantages that many people may never have thought about. We are close to half of the markets in North America. New York City, Toronto, Chicago and Atlanta are all within a day’s drive. What this means is that if you make a consumer product the cost to get it to the market place and to millions of people who can buy it is far less than if you were in Asia, Europe or even the Gulf Coast. You can also get it to millions of consumers faster. These are huge […]

Visualizing the Jobs Lost to Automation

Visualizing the Jobs Lost to Automation

The employment landscape of the future will look very different than it does today.

While we’ve charted the automation potential of U.S. jobs before, today’s graphic from Henrik Lindberg perhaps tells the story more succinctly.

In plain black and white, it shows the jobs that exist today in contrast to the jobs that are expected to disappear as a result of automation in the workplace. Though, technically speaking, it is applying the probabilities of the widely-cited Frey & Osborne (2013) study to U.S. jobs as of 2016 to give an expected value to each job title. A DIFFERENT LANDSCAPE In the […]

San Francisco could start taxing robots to save jobs

San Francisco could start taxing robots to save jobs

San Francisco lawmakers are considering a "robot tax" to help protect jobs against automation. Although fully autonomous digital workers are still some way off, leaders are beginning to think seriously about the potential for mass unemployment.

The idea of taxing robots has previously been pushed forward by tech visionaries including Microsoft founder Bill Gates. This week, San Francisco lawmaker Jane Kim broached the subject too, pointing out that robots could have to pay taxes as a substitute for human income tax and to prevent unprecedented unemployment. In an interview with WIRED , Kim said she was inspired to act after […]
