The Dangers Of A “Universal Basic Income”

The Dangers Of A “Universal Basic Income”

Finland has announced that it is conducting a social policy “experiment” which deserves closer examination. Through 2017 and 2018, Finland will provide a guaranteed basic income of 560 euros to 2,000 randomly selected welfare recipients. This benefit will be subtracted from other, currently existing welfare benefits that participants may be receiving, and, crucially, the payments will continue regardless of any other income that is earned. If a participant of this program finds a job, the government will continue to pay them the 560 euros in addition to any other income.

The Finnish government hopes — and many believe […]

Standing, a professor at the University of London, is a leading advocate of a UBI, a scheme by which every resident of a country would receive a regular state payment regardless of working status.

Funding social security after automation

Funding social security after automation

Finding the money to pay for our social security is becoming more difficult, because paid work is being replaced by robots — the financial foundation of the social security system is crumbling. This is true whether we talk about financing basic income or any other social security system. Increasingly, automation is replacing “productive” jobs. There is still room to create jobs in basic services. However, such jobs do not create enough “added value” to “contribute” to the financing of our social security system. We are happy that these new jobs provide an income to those families. But it is […]

Less than 10% of jobs threatened by 3D printing & automation, says French employment council

Like many new technologies, 3D printing has generated a lot of excitement while also inciting a fair amount of skepticism and—on occasion—vehement resistance. Perhaps the most prominent critique of the new technology is the idea that the adoption of additive manufacturing across a wide number of industries will result in the loss of jobs, particularly in the manufacturing sector.

According to a recent report by France’s Employment Policy Council ( Conseil d’orientation pour l’emploi ), this claim could be seen as simplistic and exaggerated. In fact, the report estimates that less than 10% of jobs will actually be threatened by […]

How Much Will AI Decrease The Need For Human Labor?

(Image: Creative Commons) Do you think AI will decrease human labor? originally appeared on Quora : the knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights .

20M-40M jobs are in peril in the US from developments in AI and other technology — 15 to 30% of the US labor force. So if foreseeable technologies materialize, then then the need for human labor could decrease.

Technology always puts existing jobs under strain. This doesn’t immediately mean that human labor as a whole is under threat. Generally, other professions grow to fill the loss, often creating more jobs […]

New EU report recommends Universal Basic Income for all 27 member states

New EU report recommends Universal Basic Income for all 27 member states

In a new report , commissioned in 2016 and released earlier this week by the European Union, MEPs have warned that all 27 member states must seriously consider piloting and introducing Universal Basic Income (UBI) schemes that help their societies prepare for a future packed with artificial intelligence (AI), automation and robots. A future that pessimists regard as a jobless one and that optimists regard as a “hybrid” future – where humans and machines increasingly work alongside or compete with each other to fulfil both Blue Collar and White Collar jobs.

The report, which passed by 17 votes to 2, […]

Finland to pay unemployed a SALARY – even AFTER they get a job A person visits an unemployment office in Finland A lucky 2,000 unemployed residents will receive £475 (€560) a month, with no requirement on how the money is spent, as part of a two-year trial. The unemployment experiment could be expanded later to low-income groups such as freelancers, small entrepreneurs and part-time workers. KELA, The Social Insurance Institution of Finland, said the scheme was an attempt to discourage people’s fears “of losing out something” and the payments will continue even after receiving a job.
