Can generative AI limit the impact of a shrinking, ageing field service workforce?

Can generative AI limit the impact of a shrinking, ageing field service workforce?

There’s an understandable nervousness among any workforce when you start talking about automation. It’s actually been 10 years since Oxford University academics Carl Benedikt Frey and Michael Osborne released their seminal paper entitled The Future of Employment which contained a list of occupations with an automation probability score. It was the paper that launched a spate of headlines claiming robots were coming for our jobs.

For field services teams, this has been a slow burn. As the paper suggests, “the manual tasks of service occupations are less susceptible to computerisation, as they require a higher degree of flexibility and physical […]

The Turing Transformation: Artificial intelligence, intelligence augmentation, and skill premiums

The Turing Transformation: Artificial intelligence, intelligence augmentation, and skill premiums

Almon Brown Strowager, an American undertaker from the 19 th century, allegedly angry that a local switch operator (and wife of a competing undertaker) was redirecting his customer calls to her husband , sought to take all switch operators to their employment graves. He conceived of and, with family members, invented the Strowager switch that automated the placement of phone calls in a network. The switch spread worldwide and, as a consequence, a job that once employed over 200,000 Americans has almost disappeared.

While the pioneer researchers in new areas of artificial intelligence (AI) such as machine learning, deep learning, […]

NPR’s ‘Planet Money’ creates an episode using artificial intelligence

A MARTÍNEZ, HOST:

The new wave of artificial intelligence technologies may be as disruptive to the economy as the steam-powered engine. Or will it be more like electricity or maybe the rise of computers? Our Planet Money podcast has been thinking about AI and a different moment in history. Jeff Guo, Kenny Malone, and NPR’s GPT reporter brings us the story.

KENNY MALONE, BYLINE: One of the most common jobs for women in the United States used to be the telephone operator, the person who physically connected one phone call to another.JEFF GUO, BYLINE: But by the early 1900s, a machine […]

Fears Of AI Are Greatly Exaggerated

Fears Of AI Are Greatly Exaggerated

A man moves his finger toward an automated hand. AFP PHOTO/ GERARD JULIEN (Photo credit … [+] AFP via Getty Images Fear colors much conversation about artificial intelligence (AI). Some seem concerned with matters of privacy, others worry over abuses of power or the upending of social relationships. Much of the fear centers on job destruction. These last concerns are far from new. They have emerged with every technological advance since the industrial revolution began in the late eighteenth century. They are a very old story that commentators today have attached to something otherwise very new. If the history […]

Are you ready for the great disruption? According to a recent article in The New York Times, tens of millions of jobs could be automated by generative artificial intelligence. Boosters of AI are bullish on how this technology will increase productivity, but the cost for workers could be enormous.

According to The New York Times, “there will be immense instability for displaced workers. Automation has been a significant driver of income inequality in […]

Workplace fatality rates have been stagnant for decades. Could robotics finally reduce them?

Workplace fatality rates have been stagnant for decades. Could robotics finally reduce them?

Despite ongoing concerns about automation in the workplace, robotics focused on safety could lead to the creation of new jobs in other areas, particularly in engineering, maintenance and programming, a National Safety Council report found. Robotics in the workplace — especially autonomous mobile robots, or AMRs — may be able to reduce injuries and improve safety across a variety of industries, according to a May 25 report from the National Safety Council.

Overall, U.S. workplace fatality rates haven’t changed much in the past three decades, despite efforts to reduce injury and death. However, newer technologies may be able to help.

“Robotics […]

10 Jobs that could be at risk in the future due to AI

DADO RUVICREUTERS Over the next ten years, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that around 2.1 million jobs will be lost , with one of the main drivers being the growth of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) . However alarming that statistic may be, the BLS also projects the economy to add 10.4 million jobs by 2031. Together this means that the US economy will see around eight million jobs created over the next decade .

When trying to identify the ten jobs more threatened by AI, we must consider if we are talking about the total number of jobs […]

How universities can best prepare for the generative AI tech revolution

Artificial Intelligence machine learning. [Getty Images] Every major technological revolution sets in motion a concurrent revolution in work. With the development of organised agriculture thousands of years ago, foragers settled on farms. During the Industrial Revolution, steam engines drove those farmers into factories. In the late 20th century, the arrival of the personal computer swapped machines for monitors, and lathes for laptops.

Now, with the appearance of the latest wave of generative artificial intelligence (AI), humanity is about to embark on an entirely new working order.

Last year, the OECD predicted that AI would “radically transform” 1.1 billion jobs in the […]

AI race drives down stock market valuations of education firms

AI race drives down stock market valuations of education firms

ChatGPT has become a phenomenon since its launch in November. The artificial intelligence race is already producing losers. On Tuesday, education companies trading on the London and New York stock exchanges saw hundreds of millions wiped from their valuations after Chegg, a US firm that provides online help to students for writing and maths work, said ChatGPT was affecting customer growth .

The firm said it had seen a “significant spike” in students using the technology, and withdrew its profits guidance for the rest of the year, warning revenues had already been hit. It shares almost halved in value. The […]
