1/OK, let us talk about robots and jobs, once again!

Andrew Yang is a good guy, and I like a number of his ideas (including UBI and VAT). But on the threat of automation, the math just doesn’t check out. Here is why:

2/First piece of evidence that robots aren’t currently taking human jobs overall: Employment levels are high right now. Prime-age employment rates are at or above their peaks in the mid-2000s and late-80s booms. 3/But what about wages??Well, real median weekly earnings are going up, for the first time in a long time. 6/Piece of evidence #4: All of the countries with lots of industrial robots […]

like | dislike Question:

Should we devise and adopt an economic model which seeks low employment rather than full employment? We surely need to take advantage of AI and automation to REDUCE work not use it to increase growth and damage the environment. Impact of Technology in Organizations

Artificial intelligence (AI) and automation are two significant fields of technology advancements that enable a machine to think and act like a human being. These technologies are associated with many advantages, is job creation, increased productivity, as well as time-saving. Answer and Explanation: It would be better to plan and adopt […]

America isn’t ready for longer lifespans

America isn’t ready for longer lifespans

More workers are delaying (or coming out of) retirement, having a second career, or simply working later into life. Like Michael Jordan. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images) At the beginning of the 20th century, life expectancy was under 50 years. Today it’s 78 years. And people are routinely living far past that.

Though the CDC has found that life expectancy has been declining slightly since 2014 — largely driven by drug overdose and suicide — some studies estimate that a large number of children born today may live to 100.

The U.S. isn’t ready for this type of longevity.According to Ken […]

Welcome to The Colony: Home of the Industry’s First Integrated Automation Platform

Promoted by Antworks

As robotic process automation (RPA) platforms evolve, they usually come up against a significant obstacle, one that’s dogged the interaction between humans and computers since the latter became widespread in the enterprise: unstructured data.

That’s a technical term that suggests a random scattering of information but, in reality, it just refers to any data that’s presented to a silicon brain (or bot) that’s in an unexpected format. In most business functions, that occurrence is more common than you might imagine, because although we like to think of modern software and systems as ‘smart’, it doesn’t take much to […]

Fourth Industrial Revolution and (unwarranted) pessimism over jobs

Fourth Industrial Revolution and (unwarranted) pessimism over jobs

Ever since Homo erectus carved a piece of stone into a tool, the welfare of our species has been on the increase. Indeed, this technological breakthrough led first to the hand axe and eventually to the iPhone. We have found it convenient to organise the most dramatic period of change between these inventions into four industrial revolutions.

As each revolution unfolded, dire predictions of massive job losses ensued, increasing with each. The first three are over and these concerns were clearly misplaced. The number of jobs increased each time, as did living standards and every other social indicator.

McKinsey predicts that […]

Automation Concerns Spur Calls to Assist Workers in Adapting

Automation Concerns Spur Calls to Assist Workers in Adapting

I. DANEEK MILLER: Some civil-service jobs dwindling. City employees may have to worry less about being replaced by a machine than workers across the rest of the country, but more programs need to be introduced to help hundreds of thousands of low-skilled workers, advocates said during a Nov. 13 City Council hearing on how automation could affect jobs.

“The good news is that the city is less vulnerable than much of the country,” Eli Dvorkin, policy director of the Center for an Urban Future, told the Council’s Committee on Civil Service and Labor. The nonprofit issued a report last year […]

What will life look like when most jobs are automated?

What will life look like when most jobs are automated?

There’s a chance that it might be pretty good.

Experts estimate about a quarter of American jobs could soon be automated. Looking further down the line, we may see a majority of jobs being done by robots. If 60 percent of jobs were to be eliminated, for example, a tremendous amount of people would be out of work, and we’d very likely have to adopt a program like Universal Basic Income (UBI). We don’t yet know how these changes will impact society, but a lot of people are trying to figure out just that.

Dystopian drama Years and Years sounds warning – but who will listen?

I have recently started watching Years and Years starring Emma Thompson, and I don’t mind saying it scares the living crap out of me. This isn’t because it’s murderous, horror or C-grade sci-fi, but because it’s a TV show that tells it like it is and then tells it like it will likely become.

The picture it paints of our global future is a dire one. More than that, I can absolutely see how we seem to be hell-bent on hurtling towards such a future at full pelt. It’s honestly the stuff of nightmares.

The future world of work is an […]

We’d Better Be Ready To Rethink The Meaning Of Work, Because Things Are Changing Fast

We’d Better Be Ready To Rethink The Meaning Of Work, Because Things Are Changing Fast

Ford assembly line (1913) Author unknown – Public Domain One of the topics I explore in my new book, “ Viviendo en el futuro ” (“Living in the future”, hopefully soon to be published in English) is the rapidly changing nature of work: within a few years so many jobs we have become used to over the last century will disappear as we automate more and more tasks.

Take supermarket cashiers: soon, they will soon join the ranks of workers no longer needed on assembly lines such as the one above from a 1913 Ford plant, the prototype of dehumanizing […]
