German trade unions call for higher investment to prepare workers for digitalization

BERLIN, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) — The Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB) has urged German policymakers and businesses on Monday to ramp up investments to equip the national labor force with the skills needed in an increasingly digitalized workplace.

"The consequences (of digitalization) will only be accepted by people, be they workers or consumers, if the technology in question serves them rather than vice-versa", DGB president Reiner Hoffmann told the newspaper "WELT". As a consequence, it was urgently necessary for "much more to be invested" in the training and retraining of staff in Germany with view to innovations such as […]

Power Skills: Preparing Students for the Future of Work

In a global study carried out by McKinsey & Company, 72% of deans and university leaders said they prepare their graduates for the workforce. In contrast, only 42% of employers and 44% of students thought the same (Mourshed et al. 2013). The mismatch between universities and the world of work is real and it is huge.

In a world where the pace of technological change is accelerating, trying to guess what the future trends will be seems impossible. According to a University of Oxford study, 47% of all the occupations in the US could be lost to automation in the […]

technology Industry 4.0 automation The number of machines and robots in the workplace is set to almost double the amount of jobs that it will replace by 2025, The Guardian reports.

According to a report by the World Economic Forum (WEF), it is anticipated that approximately 133mn jobs worldwide could be created due to rapid technological advances in the workplace within the next 10 years, in comparison to the 75mn that could potentially be replaced.

The report, which is made up from a survey of company executives representing 15mn workers in 20 different nations, does warn of the potential risk […]

Report: Machines will handle 50% of workplace tasks within 7 years

LONDON (Bloomberg) — Machines and automated software will be handling fully half of all workplace tasks within seven years, a new report from the World Economic Forum forecasts. But the group said technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and precision medicine, could create more jobs than they threaten.

In a study of executives and specialists across 12 industries, published Monday, the WEF concluded that this so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution could create 133 million jobs globally, while 75 million workers may be displaced.

Saadia Zahidi, head of the WEF’s Center for the New Economy and Society, said companies had “a moral and […]

Globally, almost half of all companies expect automation to cut their full-time workforce in the next four years; however, new jobs will still lead to a net gain in employment opportunities if sufficient reskilling is done. In India, 54% of employees […]

Emerging Tech Will Create More Jobs Than It Kills by 2022, World Economic Forum Predicts

Image: AP The advancement of robotics and artificial intelligence will make 75 million jobs obsolete by the year 2022, according to a new report. Sounds dreadful, but the same report goes on to predict the creation of 133 million new jobs over the same period.

There’s a lot of uncertainty right now about the future of work, and how emerging technologies will change the nature and availability of jobs in the coming years. It’s tempting and wholly reasonable to believe, as so many do , that technological advances, particularly in the areas of robotics and AI, will result in massive […]

Artificial Intelligence WARNING: Can intelligent robots replace human jobs by 2025?

Robots could take over 52 percent of the current workload in less than a decade, forcing humans to rethink how they approach jobs.

According to the Geneva-based World Economic Forum (WEF), the number of robots taking over jobs from people will double from the current 29 percent.

The thinktank warned machines could force 75 million people out of jobs as early as 2022.The WEF said in a report published today: “By 2025 more than half of all current workplace tasks will be reformed by machines as opposed to 29 percent today.” The report dubbed this rapid displacement of workers the […]

AI ‘to create twice as many jobs as it destroys’

The World Economic Forum has issued a report stating that over the next decade AI could create almost double the number of jobs that it will destroy. According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), about 133m jobs globally could be created with the help of rapid technological advances in the workplace over the next decade, compared with 75m that could be displaced.

Developments of machines and automation software in the workplace could create 58 million new jobs in the next five years, according to the report.

Artificial Intelligence Will Kill These Jobs (And #5 Has Nobody Else To Blame)

The fourth industrial revolution is upon us and the machines are coming to take your job: but which industries are going to get hit hardest when Artificial Intelligence comes of age?

Nobody knows, is the truthful answer. We know that machine learning will change the world and automation will kill anywhere between 20% and two-thirds of the jobs on the open market.

Blockchain technology is accelerating AI research, to the extent that there are even companies like DeepBrain Chain that specialize in nothing but providing computing resources to AI developers.Former Bank of England chief executive Antony Jenkins suggests half of customer […]

RUTH SUNDERLAND: History tells us automation does not take away human work, but it shifts people from one type of work to another

We shouldn’t be surprised the TUC is waxing lyrical about how robots and new technology will liberate us all to work less for the same money.

After all, no less an authority than Karl Marx claimed automation would help free the miserable proletariat from their drudgery.

John Maynard Keynes predicted in his 1930 essay, Economic Possibilities For Our Grandchildren, that technology would allow people to work no more than 15 hours a week. ‘Three hours a day is quite enough,’ he opined. Keynes didn’t have any grandchildren, but if he had, it’s highly unlikely they would be basking in hours of […]
