The Augmented Reality Workforce is Coming — Here’s What You Need to Know

The Augmented Reality Workforce is Coming -- Here's What You Need to Know

Jobs for the average worker are becoming obsolete at rate much faster than anticipated. While advances in automation are revolutionizing the way many businesses operate, the humans whose jobs once catered to these tasks are being displaced.

Many businesses ushering in this automation have been provided hazy answers as to what will happen to the people who will lose their jobs. The common refrain is that new jobs will take the place of old ones or that people will go back to school to be trained in new areas. None of these solutions, however, have been fully realized or […]

Automation Rewrites Job Descriptions

Automation Rewrites Job Descriptions

The transformation of the workplace through automation may represent the greatest shift in the economy ever seen. While factory workers were the first to see robots change their work processes and eliminate some of their jobs, the impact of automation is now being felt by white collar workers as well. McKinsey Global Institute estimates half of U.S. work activities could be automated by 2055 or sooner. [1]

Automation is attractive because it reduces costs and improves productivity, especially in times of lackluster economic productivity growth and aging workforce populations. McKinsey estimates automation could increase global productivity growth in the […]

Deloitte’s CEO had her son watch “The Jetsons” to show him we shouldn’t fear robots

The prospects of an automated, robotic future isn’t just the obsession of labor economists and science fiction writers. It’s also unnerving 15-year-old boys.

When Deloitte CEO Cathy Engelbert’s son told her he worried there wouldn’t be a job for him when he graduated, the head of one of the largest accounting and consulting firms in the world did what any good parent would do: She sat him down in front of The Jetsons .

The Jetsons , an early 1960s cartoon about a family in the far future, “was way ahead of its time,” Engelbert tells Quartz. The show explored […]

Job automation threatens employment opportunities

Job automation threatens employment opportunities

Future jobs will be replaced with proliferation of artificial intelligence and robotics. | Tim Seeberger/THE CHIMES While President Donald Trump has worked on keeping American factories alive by rewriting trade deals, taxing imports and removing regulations, a greater risk to the loss of jobs lies ahead. The automation of jobs has been a threat on the horizon for years. 38 percent of jobs in the U.S. are at high risk of being replaced by robots and artificial intelligence over the next 15 years, according to a report by PricewaterhouseCoopers . Many manufacturing and warehouse jobs have been taken over […]

Low-wage cities such as Las Vegas, Orlando, and El Paso will be hit the hardest by job automation, according to a recent report from the Institute for Spatial Economic Analysis (ISEA). And the impact of automation on job losses is likely to be more severe than previously predicted, the report stated: Due to advances in machine learning and mobile robotics, jobs such as truck driving, healthcare diagnostics, and education are more likely to be affected.

“The replacement of jobs by machines has been happening continuously since the Industrial Revolution, but it’s expected to significantly accelerate in the […]

The Robots Taking Factory Jobs Just Had Their Best Quarter Ever

The Robots Taking Factory Jobs Just Had Their Best Quarter Ever

The North American robotics industry had its best first quarter ever in 2017, in terms of both money made and robots sold.

A new report published last week by the Robotic Industries Association finds that “an all-time high total of 9,773 robots valued at approximately $516 million were ordered from North American robotics companies during the first quarter of 2017.” It marks a 32 percent increase in units sold from the first quarter of 2016 and 28 percent growth in the value of the units.

There was also a 3 percent decrease in the average price of these units over the […]

How you can protect your job from automation

How you can protect your job from automation

Automation and the workplace is an issue that I’ve touched on extensively in the past year or so, and I’m broadly cynical about the doomsday scenarios that are proliferating at the moment, in no small part because of the dubious methodology many of the studies that underpin these ‘robots will take our jobs’ scenarios.

It would be churlish to believe that new technologies won’t impact the labor market though, and it will undoubtedly pay to be as agile and adaptive as possible.

A recent paper published in the European Journal of Personality examines the kind of traits we might consider developing […]

Robots Aren’t Destroying Enough Jobs — Capital Account

Robots Aren't Destroying Enough Jobs -- Capital Account

From Silicon Valley to Davos, pundits have been warning that millions of individuals will be thrown out of work by the rapid advance of automation and artificial intelligence. As economic forecasts go, this idea of a robot apocalypse is certainly chilling. It’s also baffling and misguided.

Baffling because it’s starkly at odds with the evidence, and misguided because it completely misses the problem: robots aren’t destroying enough jobs. Too many sectors, such as health care or personal services, are so resistant to automation that they are holding back the entire country’s standard of living.

"Robot" is shorthand for any device or […]
