Robots to take 20M jobs, worsening inequality – study

WASHINGTON, USA – Robots are expected to take over some 20 million manufacturing jobs worldwide by 2030, extending a trend of worsening social inequality while boosting overall economic output, a new study shows.

The forecast set to be released Wednesday, June 26, highlights growing concerns that automation and robots , while offering economic benefits, are disproportionately killing low-skill jobs and aggravating social and economic stress.

The study by Oxford Economics, a private British-based research and consulting firm, said job displacement from the rise of robots will not be evenly spread around the world, or within countries.Robots have already taken over millions […]

One day of paid work a week is enough for mental health perks

One day of paid work a week is enough for mental health perks

Researchers discovered that eight hours of work per week reduces mental health issues by 30 percent.

Working a full-time job, roughly 40 hours per week, does not result in further mental health gains.

Societies are going to have to grapple with a new distribution of work as AI and robotics will soon replace many jobs. Alibaba co-founder, Jack Ma, came under fire in April when calling a twelve-hour a day, six-day workweek a " blessing ." He defended his statement by claiming China’s booming economy is the result of booting out "slackers," yet the sentiment reeked […]

Preparing Education for Industry 4.0

The following is an excerpt from “Towards Education 3.0: The Changing Goalposts for Education” by Chris Goldspink & Robert Kay. To download the full white paper and others in the Corwin Educator Series, click here .

Education has always been concerned with preparing children and young people with the skills and capabilities they need for a full and rewarding future. However, within this statement there exists a significant assumption: that we understand what the future will be. History has shown that as a species we are not particularly good at conceiving of futures that are radically different from what […]

The idea that automation will drive up unemployment or drive down wages—in other words, that robots will take people’s jobs—has become almost an article of faith for many Americans.

Everyone can point to instances of automation reducing demand for certain workers. And with so-called artificial intelligence (AI) technology improving rapidly, there’s widespread worry that many humans will simply be made obsolete. News outlets are full of […]

What automation means for the gender gap

Mekala Krishnan and Laura Tyson

BERKELEY — Recent trends, and the broader history of technological change, indicate that automation will usher in major shifts in labour markets over the next decade, displacing millions of workers but also creating millions of new jobs that require new skills. The McKinsey Global Institute (MGI), having documented these changes for several years, has produced a new report examining how automation might affect men and women differently. A key conclusion of the study is that persistent gender disparities in the workplace, as documented in a previous MGI report, will make it more difficult for […]

Does Focusing on Manufacturing Make Sense for the U.S.?

Does Focusing on Manufacturing Make Sense for the U.S.?

(Bloomberg Opinion) — As part of her campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, Senator Elizabeth Warren has proposed a broad effort to revive and expand American manufacturing. Bloomberg Opinion columnists Karl Smith and Noah Smith met recently online to debate her proposal.Karl Smith: Noah, from what I can tell you’re a fan of Warren’s Economic Patriotism platform and you’ve written yourself in favor of industrial policy. My concerns are essentially two-fold. First, I think that given the U.S.’s strength in what we might call knowledge industries such as tech, biotech, fracking and finance, it’s going to be difficult […]
