Automated Deindustrialization: How Global Robotization Affects Emerging Economies—Evidence from Brazil

Highlights

• This study examines the effects of automation technology adoption by domestic and trade-partner industries on employment in 557 regions of Brazil.

• The empirical analysis is grounded on a Ricardian model of trade, and instrumental variables account for endogeneity in robot adoption. • Automation in trade-partner countries reduces the employment share in manufacturing, while increasing employment shares in the mining sector. • The same pattern is found for sectoral and regional exports, suggesting that shifts in the demand for export goods are causing employment changes. • Automation within Brazil increases the ratio of […]

Low Skilled Labour – A Weak Link in China’s Industrial Strategy

A vast majority of Chinese manufacturers are facing labour shortage. According to a survey of China International Intellectech Co. (CIIC), the shortages range from a few hundreds to thousands of workers in many factories constituting equivalent to 10%-30% of their total work force.

Chinese businesses face labour shortages of 70% and it is 55% for companies, according to the ‘Blue Collar Employment and Compensation Management Report 2021’. China’s Ministry of Education has forecasted a shortage of nearly 30 million manufacturing workers by 2025. Nuálach Automation: tailor-made solutions for repetitive tasks and physical strains

Kealan O’Connell and Evan Roarke, co-founders of Nuálach Automation. Automation is one way SMEs in the manufacturing sector can stay profitable and competitive in the face of growing labour and skills shortages. However, many SME owners won’t even go there because they assume the cost would be prohibitive. Not so says Kealan O’Connell, who cofounded Nuálach Automation with Evan Roarke in 2021 to overcome this perception and help smaller companies use innovative technologies, such as robots, to sustain and grow their businesses.

There is no shortage of companies in the automation space, but Nuálach’s founders are differentiating themselves from the […]

Effects of Workforce Changes in the United States by 2030

Effects of Workforce Changes in the United States by 2030

A recent study by the McKinsey Global Institute predicts that around 12 million American workers may need to switch jobs by the year 2030. The rise of artificial intelligence (AI), an aging population, and the impact of e-commerce on employment are the key factors driving this shift.

Unlike the voluntary job changes observed during the “Great Resignation,” the study suggests that approximately 11.8 million workers will be compelled to change careers out of necessity rather than choice. Out of these workers, around nine million individuals may have to transition to entirely different industries.

The study identifies four categories where job levels […]

Industrial Policy Isn’t About Jobs

Industrial Policy Isn't About Jobs

One of the most common refrains from politicians of both parties who want to justify their new programs or higher spending is that it will create jobs. Then there are those who argue that the goal of industrial policy is the creation of “good jobs.” I wish they would stop so we could have a conversation about what industrial policy is about and whether it is the best way to achieve whatever goal it is supposed to achieve.

With that in mind, I thought these comments from Noah Smith and Larry Summers were interesting.

During a Good Fellows podcast a few […]
