DENSO deploys MiR250 autonomous mobile robots in Athens

DENSO, a leading mobility supplier, has increased efficiencies, improved employee morale and ergonomics, and managed a tight labor market by deploying six MiR250 autonomous mobile robots to transport materials in its 800,000 square foot powertrain component production facility in Athens, Tennessee.

According to a new case study from Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR), DENSO has successfully executed more than 500,000 missions since deploying its first MiR robot in 2020, recognizing a return on investment (ROI) in less than a year along with an ongoing need for more AMRs for additional logistics applications.

One of MiR’s largest global customers, DENSO has AMRs from […]

Fixing the rep of blue-collar jobs

Fixing the rep of blue-collar jobs

There’s nothing like classic wisdom to shed some light on things.

In the 1963 Looney Toons gem “The Million Hare,” Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny race to a TV studio to claim the $1 million grand prize in a show’s competition. After putting himself and Bugs in the hospital with yet another idiotic scheme, Daffy hobbles to the finish line ahead of Bugs and wins … the Million Box, complete with one million little boxes inside it.

Thinking he was duped, Daffy impetuously donates his prize to Bugs—just in time to learn that inside each little box is a crisp $1 […]

The Economy That Just Won’t Quit: Why Jobs Keep Getting Created

The Economy That Just Won’t Quit: Why Jobs Keep Getting Created

Economist seem baffled about job creation, even in the economic slowdown. This month the US unemployment rate dropped to 3.5% , the lowest level in more than 50 years . The Fed, which keeps raising rates and trying to reduce asset prices, simply cannot stop the growth.

While some of this is due to the economic cycle (and the money pumped into the economy during the pandemic), I believe something bigger is going on. The labor market has fundamentally changed, and we’re probably never going back to the old market again.

There are three big things going on, so let me […]

IronOx Shows Us the Farm of the Near Future, Staffed by Robots

Agriculture hasn’t fundamentally changed since World War II, when the era of huge scale and vast plenty began. But today’s awareness of greenhouse gases, water conservation and food safety and stability call for a rethink. Silicon Valley startup IronOx suggests moving crops indoors, tending them with robots and doing so under the watchful eyes of smart cameras to grow more and better with less worry that the food sustaining us is also slowly killing us. Automation could leave many Arizonans out of work, study warns

It also recommends the state invest more in job training to hedge job losses. Autonomous truck technology road-tested in Tucson Arizona is a hotspot for new technology in self-driving vehicles. A new study from the Grand Canyon Institute said that could put over half of transportation sector jobs in the state at risk.

It also said the state can soften that blow by providing more training for workers in that sector.

Max Goshert co-authored the study, and he said that in the short-term, more automation could help companies that have struggled to hire get more done. But it’ll eventually put people […]

Rent-a-Robot and Our Tight Labor Market

Rent-a-Robot and Our Tight Labor Market

Born from a chance encounter between a robotics tinkerer and an Isaac Asimov-inspired engineer-turned-entrepreneur , the Unimate —a single-armed, vacuum tube-driven robot—was put to work on the assembly lines of the General Motors plant in Ewing, New Jersey in 1961. It was a watershed moment for industrial robotics and the first sign of changes that would rewrite the rules for automation, employment, and trade.

Following that first Unimate, industrial robotics progressed in fits and starts thanks to the complicated dynamics of human labor costs, innovations in non-robotic automation, and advances in robotic control technology. While the economic and energy crises […]
