Four-day work week

Four-day work week

As countries in Europe and North America emerge from lock-down and start trying to rebuild their devastated economies, the great concern is jobs.
Unemployment in the US and Canada is over 13%, a post-Second World War high. If it weren’t for subsidies that keep up to a fifth of the working population in paid ‘furloughs’ from their jobs, jobless rates in Europe would be as high or higher. That can’t go on forever, so there is a frantic search for job-saving strategies – and the ‘four-day work week’ keeps coming up.
Like that other proposed magic bullet, the guaranteed […]

Four-Day Work Week

Four Day Work Week_1 By GWYNNE DYER :

Less than a century ago the whole industrialised world transitioned from the traditional six-day working week (Saturdays included) to a five-day work-week, for the same pay, with no political upheaval and no significant loss of production. So why don’t we do that again, spread the work around, and save lots of jobs?

A new work module

The four-day week is an idea whose time may have come but it is not a magic bullet. Companies don’t hire more people just to spread the work around

As countries in Europe and North America emerge from the lockdown and try to rebuild devastated economies, the great concern is of jobs. Unemployment in the US and Canada is over 13 per cent, a post World War-II high. If it weren’t for subsidies that keep up to a fifth of the working population in paid “furloughs” from their jobs, jobless rates in Europe would be as high or higher. […]

In Depth: The Future of Work Part 1

Future of Work in depth The hardest thing about the future of work is defining the concept. The chief reason has to do with change. It’s constant with new technologies coming online at an increasing pace and changing the way people complete their work.

If the data is to be believed, what HR knows about work is quickly disappearing. Korn Ferry predicts by 2030 a global human talent shortage of more than 85 million people will exist. That’s an astonishing prediction, but changes are expected well in advance of that year. Forty percent of today’s Fortune 500 companies, according to […]

Study finds stronger links between automation and inequality !!!

Study finds stronger links between automation and inequality !!!

This is part 3 of a three-part series examining the effects of robots and automation on employment, based on new research from economist and Institute Professor Daron Acemoglu.

Modern technology affects different workers in different ways. In some white-collar jobs — designer, engineer — people become more productive with sophisticated software at their side. In other cases, forms of automation, from robots to phone-answering systems, have simply replaced factory workers, receptionists, and many other kinds of employees.

Now a new study co-authored by an MIT economist suggests automation has a bigger impact on the labor market and income inequality than previous […]

Universal Basic Income: Economic liberation or the first step towards slavery?

Emanuel Pastreich, Candidate for President of the United States(Independent) During the Democratic primaries, Andrew Yang brought up universal basic income (UBI) and made it central in his vision for the economy of the United States. The theme was echoed by Bernie Sanders who cited the income guarantee that is offered by countries like Denmark and Finland as a possible model for future development.

Both Yang and Sanders argued that automation of production and other technological changes taking place in America has created a lag in job creation even as the economy flourishes, and that such a state can be responded […]

Martin Spano (Source: Courtesy of Martin Spano) Martin Spano is the author of Artificial Intelligence in a Nutshell, a book that explores the mystified subject of artificial intelligence (AI) with simple, non-technical language. Spano’s passion for AI began after he watched 2001: A Space Odyssey, but he insists this ever-changing technology is not just the subject of sci-fi novels and movies; artificial intelligence is present in our everyday lives.

One of the most common questions I get during lectures is whether and when artificial intelligence will take over our work. Employees ask me this, but entrepreneurs also want to […]
