How Will Automation, AI Impact Healthcare Employment?

Source: Thinkstock The report, titled Automation and Artificial Intelligence: How machines are affecting people and places , looks back at how automation impacted the workforce from the 1980s to 2016 and offers projections on how new automation and artificial intelligence (AI) tools will affect the economy by 2030.

“The next phase of automation, increasingly involving AI, seems like it should be manageable in the aggregate labor market, though there are many sources of uncertainty,” Mark Muro, Senior Fellow and lead author of the report, stated in a press release . “With that said, the potential effects will vary significantly across […]

The robotic future of work is messy, fuzzy and uneven

The robotic future of work is messy, fuzzy and uneven

For nearly one hundred years, science fiction has warned of robotic takeovers and a dystopian societal collapse as pseudo-intelligent, autonomous devices discover that they have little need for humans. Videos from BostonDynamics seem designed to stoke such foreboding, at least for promotional effect. Although the prospect of rogue robots destroying their creators is remote for now, a burgeoning army of industrial robots is displacing workers in a growing number of occupations.

The extent of job losses and their long-term implications on the labor market are topics of hot debate. A recent Brookings Institute study , for example, estimates that several […]

Irish people feel almost certain that large scale job automation is coming

Irish people feel almost certain that large scale job automation is coming

Ninety four percent of Irish people believe that large scale job automation will occur at some point in the future, with 46% predicting this eventuality will come to pass in the very near future.

This is according to a study by iReach. The nationally representative survey of 1001 people found that no such certainty is apparent when considering the consequences either positive or negative of such automation.

When thinking about the impact of job automation on the productivity and prosperity of the Irish economy, 55% view it as a positive, with those who view the impact as a negative slightly further […]

Automation threatens a quarter United States jobs by 2030

Automation threatens a quarter United States jobs by 2030

For many sectors of the USA economy, the future of work is automation. Though the United States is in the middle of its second-longest expansion in history, and jobs data suggest that the economy remains healthy, many business leaders and economists have suggested in surveys that the United States could slip into a recession in 2020. "Similarly, the productivity and wage gains brought by automation can result in workers having more disposable income, which increases consumption and hence employment in other industries".

But with new advances in artificial intelligence, it’s not just industrial and warehouse robots that will alter the […]

One out of three millennials in Donald Trump’s America embrace socialism . That number rises to nearly half of all millennial Democrats. More millennials voted for Bernie Sanders, a self-described Democratic Socialist, in the 2016 Democratic primaries than for Hillary […]

Automation is a bigger threat, depending on race, education and where you live, among other factors

Automation is a bigger threat, depending on race, education and where you live, among other factors

Is a robot coming for your job?

That is more likely for Californians who work in Riverside, San Bernardino, Merced or Modesto, according to a report released Thursday by the Brookings Institution. Those who live in San Francisco or San Jose have a better chance of weathering a coming onslaught of automation and artificial intelligence.

The new study by the Washington think tank suggests that intelligent machines may well take over many more tasks from humans in the future. But it forecasts dramatic differences among cities, occupations, ethnic and racial groups, educational levels and age groups.“California turns out to have super-stark […]

Brookings: Food Service Jobs for Humans in Jeopardy as Automation Takes Hold

Photo by Andy Kelly on Unsplash The Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program released a new report yesterday on the future and impact of automation on the U.S. workforce. Predictably, food service jobs do not fare well.

Automation and Artificial Intelligence: How machines are affecting people and places forecasts automation trends across industries through 2030. From that report:

Approximately 25 percent of U.S. employment (36 million jobs in 2016) will face high exposure to automation in the coming decades (with greater than 70 percent of current task content at risk of substitution). Among the industries with the greatest share of tasks […]

The Effect of AI Across the US and How to Adjust

The Effect of AI Across the US and How to Adjust

New Brookings study says the potential effects will “vary significantly across occupations, regions, and demographic groups,” so policymakers have a lot to do to adapt to the new reality.

Whatever you look artificial intelligence is present. In order to get a handle on how and where this technology, and automation in general, will impact U.S. workers, the Brookings Institute analyzed data in a variety of industries, geographies, and demographic groups across the country.

“The next phase of automation, increasingly involving AI, seems like it should be manageable in the aggregate labor market, though there are many sources of uncertainty,” said Mark […]
