Japan urges companies to invest more in their workers

Workers who lack the skills to help shape the digital future risk having their jobs automated. © Reuters TOKYO — Japanese employers and employees will have to work together to improve workers’ skills or risk being left behind by the digital revolution, according to the upcoming Annual Report on the Japanese Economy and Public Finance 2018.

Japan’s Cabinet Office is finalizing the report and could release it this month.

A draft of the report seen by Nikkei stresses the impact that the digital revolution is having on Japan’s labor force. Saying further economic growth rests on workers becoming more digitally literate, […]

How the left must respond to the real automation crisis

How the left must respond to the real automation crisis

One of the prevailing themes of our time is that the robots are coming for our jobs WAGES may be stagnant, conditions may be lousy, job security may be a thing of the past, but the one economic problem we seemingly don’t have right now is unemployment. Indeed, last year it was announced that Britain had its highest proportion of people in work since 1975. Nonetheless, one of the prevailing themes of our time is that the robots are coming for our jobs and that vast swathes of the population are about to be declared redundant.

There is more plausibility […]

Economists worry we aren’t prepared for the fallout from automation

Economists worry we aren’t prepared for the fallout from automation

Are we focusing too much on analyzing exactly how many jobs could be destroyed by the coming wave of automation, and not enough on how to actually fix the problem? That’s one conclusion in a new paper on the potential affects of robotics and AI on global labor markets from US think tank, the Center for Global Development (CGD).

The paper’s authors, Lukas Schlogl and Andy Sumner, say it’s impossible to know exactly how many jobs will be destroyed or disrupted by new technology. But, they add, it’s fairly certain there’s going to be significant effects — especially in developing […]

How the Wheel of Innovation Impacts the Economy

How the Wheel of Innovation Impacts the Economy

Innovation is all about disruption. This forces businesses to evolve if they wish to remain relevant in today’s rapidly-changing economic climate. It is also a key factor in economic growth, without which enduring economic growth would be impossible.

So what exactly is innovation? The European Central Bank describes it as “the development and application of ideas and technologies that improve goods and services or make their production more efficient”.

Innovation is what keeps established enterprises from becoming stagnant, and it is in the DNA of all exciting startups.Innovation, when done properly, challenges old paradigms, develops new ways of thinking, improves quality […]

Not All Automation Is The Same

Not All Automation Is The Same

I want to talk about two very, very different reasons why firms attempt to minimize labor costs. They are too often conflated, and yet have very different implications. An AI robot (L) by CloudMinds is seen during the Mobile World Conference in Shanghai on June 27, 2018. (Photo by – / AFP) / China OUT (Photo credit should read -/AFP/Getty Images) The first is: strong labor demand -> high wages -> labor saving technology. I will call this, simply enough, the labor demand mechanism. This occurs across the economy at full employment, causing labor demand overall to be high. […]

Automation and Jobs: When Technology Boosts Employment

47 Pages Posted: 18 Mar 2017 Last revised: 28 Mar 2018 Abstract

Do industries shed jobs when they adopt new labor-saving technologies? Sometimes productivity-enhancing technology increases industry employment instead. In manufacturing, jobs grew along with productivity for a century or more; only later did productivity gains bring declining employment. What changed? Markets became saturated. While the literature on structural change provides reasons for the decline in the manufacturing share of employment, few papers can explain both the rise and subsequent fall. Using two centuries of data, a simple model of demand accurately explains the rise and fall of employment […]

Who’s afraid of the big bad robot?

Who's afraid of the big bad robot?

Beware the Bogeybot. This nefarious (and cheap!) automaton comes for the jobs of all the naughty workers who never bothered to learn a new skill.

It’s also a complete fairy tale. For years, economic analysts and businesspeople have warned that workers just weren’t learning the skills necessary to keep up with automation. And the moment robots became cheap replacements, the unskilled would be out on the street. But now that the American economy has clawed its way back to some semblance of health, this story is being revealed as essentially fiction.

Australia needs 200,000 more jobs to thrive in digital economy

In order for Australia to take the lead in digital skills and employment, the nation requires the creation of an extra 200,000 jobs, a new report has revealed.

According to the 2018 edition of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Digital Pulse report, the country needs a further 100,000 technology jobs on top of the 100,000 roles already forecast in the next five years.

In just the last three years, 63,000 new tech roles were created, with the Australian ICT workforce growing 3.5 per cent from 640,800 workers in 2016, to 663,100 workers in 2017.“The demand for digital skills in our economy […]

Machine learning will redesign, not replace, work

Machine learning will redesign, not replace, work

New research shows that machine learning will likely replace tasks within jobs, not whole occupations. Credit: MIT Sloan School of Management The conversation around artificial intelligence and automation seems dominated by either doomsayers who fear robots will supplant all humans in the workforce, or optimists who think there’s nothing new under the sun. But MIT Sloan professor Erik Brynjolfsson and his colleagues say that debate needs to take a different tone.

New research finds that specific tasks within jobs , rather than entire occupations themselves, will be replaced by automation in the near future, with some jobs more heavily impacted […]
