How Will Automation, AI Impact Healthcare Employment?

by Jacqueline LaPointe, Revcycle Intelligence

Healthcare employment will have low exposure to automation in the next decade despite the increased use of artificial intelligence to replace some tasks, experts predict.

January 30, 2019 – Increased use of automation and artificial intelligence is slated to replace millions of jobs and tasks in the near future. However, healthcare employment is relatively safe from automation, according to a new report from the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program. The report, titled Automation and Artificial Intelligence: How machines are affecting people and places, looks back at how automation impacted the workforce from the 1980s to […]

Whatever happened to all the jobs?

Whatever happened to all the jobs?

In the good old days of call centres, the revenues of Indian BPOs equalled the number of people they hired. Award winning journalist Goutam Das first book ‘Jobnomics’ on India’s unemployment crisis and what the future holds, could not have been more perfectly timed. The latest "unpublished" report by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) only confirms our worst fears, that there are not enough jobs going around, pushing young, educated youth to desperation. The anger of young people could well spell doom for the five-year-old Modi government, which is presenting its "vote-on-account", the last of its financial papers, […]

Guarantee Jobs …to Robots?

Earlier this week, and just months before the Lok Sabha elections, Congress president Rahul Gandhi promised guaranteed income for the poor if his party comes to power at the Centre.

For it to fly, the populist plan should also account for a future where technology efficiency will spawn mass unemployment. Gandhi’s income guarantee will have to be expansive and nimble to take the sting out of income disparity and looming social discontent.

Widespread unemployment from technology changes can no longer be dismissed as an alarmist theory, nor can its social impact. Silicon Valley has known this for a while. Everyone, from […]

25 per cent US jobs will be impacted by automation

Automation threatens a quarter US jobs by 2030: study – Xinhua | English.news.cn Approximately 25 percent of USA employment will "face high exposure" to automation by 2030, with greater than 70 percent of current task content at risk of replacement, a study from the Brookings Institution has found. The former – which includes roles like packaging machine operator, delivery service driver and retail salesperson – has an average automation potential of 55 percent, compared with 24 percent susceptibility among the latter. Men, youth, and under-represented groups will be the most affected among demographic groups.

While the timeframe is vastly imprecise, […]

Why your job may be disappearing

Why your job may be disappearing

Share this article For more than 50 years now, intellectuals like Herman Kahn have been predicting a future where very few of us will work. Yet unemployment is no worse than it’s ever been. Reasonably enough, most of us have stopped worrying about it. But recent developments in automation and artificial intelligence have sharply increased the chances that your job’s going away — and probably far sooner than you think. What Business Leaders Say (and What They Really Think)

Until very recently, common assumptions about the future of work — and specifically, the impact technology on employment — […]

How Will Automation, AI Impact Healthcare Employment?

Source: Thinkstock The report, titled Automation and Artificial Intelligence: How machines are affecting people and places , looks back at how automation impacted the workforce from the 1980s to 2016 and offers projections on how new automation and artificial intelligence (AI) tools will affect the economy by 2030.

“The next phase of automation, increasingly involving AI, seems like it should be manageable in the aggregate labor market, though there are many sources of uncertainty,” Mark Muro, Senior Fellow and lead author of the report, stated in a press release . “With that said, the potential effects will vary significantly across […]

Selling Canadians on the idea of a guaranteed basic income

Selling Canadians on the idea of a guaranteed basic income

Statistics suggest Canadians want a different approach to guaranteed income before they lend their support, writes Marc Zwelling.

Utopians often imagined a world without jobs. Some hoped automation would bring a leisure society. Some were afraid machines would do all our work and leave us impoverished.

Canadians are suspicious of technological progress. In a 1983 Decima Research poll 72 per cent agreed automation will lead to "high unemployment." In a 2016 Angus Reid Institute poll, 63 per cent agreed "new technology is likely to eliminate more jobs than it creates."Abacus Data asked about the impact of artificial intelligence and automation […]

The robotic future of work is messy, fuzzy and uneven

The robotic future of work is messy, fuzzy and uneven

For nearly one hundred years, science fiction has warned of robotic takeovers and a dystopian societal collapse as pseudo-intelligent, autonomous devices discover that they have little need for humans. Videos from BostonDynamics seem designed to stoke such foreboding, at least for promotional effect. Although the prospect of rogue robots destroying their creators is remote for now, a burgeoning army of industrial robots is displacing workers in a growing number of occupations.

The extent of job losses and their long-term implications on the labor market are topics of hot debate. A recent Brookings Institute study , for example, estimates that several […]

With its ‘lights-off factory’, iPhone manufacturer Foxconn leads in Industry 4.0

Shanghai-listed Foxconn Industrial Internet Co Ltd (FII), a unit of Apple’s largest manufacturing contractor Foxconn, said its “lights-off ” factory has received recognition at the World Economic Forum this month. The company’s Shenzen plant made it onto a shortlist of “state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities that serve as world leaders” in how to successfully adopt and integrate cutting-edge technologies, according to WEF.

Lights-off factories are highly automated and make use of robots in the production line, hence requiring less light – and perhaps more importantly, less human workers. Foxconn is expected to slash tens of thousands of jobs as it moves forward […]

Majority of Irish people think robots are coming for our jobs - survey

However, the iReach survey also says that most people believe robots will be good for the economy.

The poll claims that just 16pc of us see “no threat” to employment in Ireland as advances are made in technology. And 76pc of Irish people believe that job automation will contribute to a rise in unemployment here. However, 55pc view job automation as “positive for the Irish economy”. Almost everyone (94pc) believes that “large scale job automation” will occur at some […]
