Employees fret for their futures as AI marches on

Humans are looking nervously over their shoulders at their computers in increasing numbers according to the latest research to be published by Kantar Insights, which found that 83% of Britons now believe artificial intelligence will make them redundant in the workplace.

Robots, automation and machine learning are fast making inroads within factories and customer service, shrinking the exclusive domain which people have thus far enjoyed while sparking concern for what the future holds.

The latest Lightspeed UK survey found that 27% of respondents believed that AI will be encroaching on their employment within their own lifetimes – although 44% felt that […]

Industry 4.0, industrial robots & 3D printing are on the cusp of changing how manufacturing is done

We love predictions. We love the way they create awe-inspiring futures that we either welcome with great anticipation or fear with crippling horror. The bigger and bolder, the better. If it’s the future, it undoubtedly will be spectacular.

I still remember sitting in Mr. Carls’ fifth-grade class at St. Patrick Grade School when he informed us all that we would be alive in the year 2000. We all gasped and marveled at a time so distant, when summers would surely last forever and bubble gum would be free. Oh, how lucky we would be to live in the year 2000. […]

The role of automation in the aging workforce

The role of automation in the aging workforce

Image Credit: 85Fifteen / Unsplash America is getting older . The Administration on Aging estimates that the segment of the United States population age 60 or older will increase to 22.2 percent in 2020. This change — driven by increased longevity and the demographic bulge of the baby boom — represents the biggest percentage point increase in the over-60 that America has ever seen. But what does this mean from an employment standpoint?

In the United States, a deep and youthful labor pool has been a differentiator for many years. In addition, there has been a real focus on ensuring […]

Will automation create jobs, or destroy them?

Will automation create jobs, or destroy them?

Asia’s experience shows that good jobs and wages reduce poverty. (Image Credit: ADB) In an era of sweeping transformations, one of the most important has been the dramatic reduction in poverty in developing Asia. Since 1990, more than one billion people have escaped extreme poverty, and many of them now earn a decent wage.

These workers are more productive and therefore earn higher salaries. Often they’ve left subsistence agriculture for better-paid jobs in modern industry and services – where 30 million new jobs have been created annually in the past 25 years.

Advances in technology have fueled this transition. From the […]

IFR Research Shows: Robots create jobs

IFR Research Shows Robots create jobs At 309 units per 10000 employees, robot density in German manufacturing industry is the third highest worldwide. At the same time, the number of people employed in Germany reached 44 million in 2017, the highest figure since reunification. The rapid spread of industrial robots has not made a dent in employment figures: Today, new tasks have been created for the workforce alongside ones performed by machines. These are the results of the latest study by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research […]

Truth, not myths should prevail over China-U.S. trade

Though repeating a lie creates the illusion of truth, yet myths, unlike the plain truth which is sustained by fact, can’t stand the test of time.

Washington has been adept at blaming other countries for its domestic woes and its recent trade offensive against China, to some extent, also falls into this category.

The Trump administration claims that since China joined the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the United States has lost more than 60,000 factories. However, a quick fact-check will show that the reality is something else. Statistics indicate that the decline in U.S. manufacturing jobs is more of a […]

Manufacturing Drives Nevada’s Job Growth

Manufacturing Drives Nevada's Job Growth

The good times roll on with our job market. The March labor report came out today Wednesday showing Nevada added 3,500 jobs last month, bringing employment in the state to an all-time record high. Nevada again has the fastest-growing economy in the nation, with over 261,000 jobs added since the recession. Manufacturing saw the biggest increase, though manufacturing is not what it used to be. As TMCC Instructor Laure’l Santos told us, "20 years ago we used to have a lot of manual machines. In the last 20 years, a lot of these machines are now robotics."

Laure’l says these […]

Will robots and AI take your job? The economic and political consequences of automation

Will robots and AI take your job? The economic and political consequences of automation

In Edward Bellamy’s classic Looking Backward , the protagonist Julian West wakes up from a 113-year slumber and finds the United States in 2000 has changed dramatically from 1887. People stop working at age forty-five and devote their lives to mentoring other people and engaging in volunteer work that benefits the overall community. There are short work weeks for employees, and everyone receives full benefits, food, and housing. [1] The reason is that new technologies of the period have enabled people to be very productive while working part-time. Businesses do not need large numbers of employees, so individuals can […]
