AI Should Change What You Do — Not Just How You Do It

AI Should Change What You Do — Not Just How You Do It

Few leaders would dispute the fact that business today is driven by data and smart algorithms. Yet, rather than real digital transformation, many instead pursue digital incrementalism, using automation to cut costs or, worse — cut jobs. Doing so might buy you some time from impatient shareholders, but it will be short-lived unless you can face the challenge: How do you reimagine what you do for a new era of AI-powered competition?

The high unemployment numbers of the Covid-19 recession have obscured a systemic problem: the accelerating effect of automation on the workforce. We have been here before. In […]

Will the pandemic further polarize the US labor market?

Will the pandemic further polarize the US labor market?

In recent decades, the U.S. labor market has undergone a fundamental shift — a polarization of the job market and the hollowing out of middle-skill occupations. Furthermore, since 1990, every U.S. recession has been followed by a so-called jobless recovery . Given the unique nature of the pandemic shock, the following question is worth considering: Will the 2020 recession further polarize the job market and leave us with another jobless recovery?

Since the early 1980s, middle-skill, routine occupations have declined while high-skill, non-routine occupations have seen substantial growth. Interestingly, low-skill, non-routine service-oriented occupations have also experienced job growth. Economists Daron […]

Visualizing Data: How Data Insights Could Be About To Change

Visualizing Data: How Data Insights Could Be About To Change

Gartner recently noted a shift away from data dashboard. Is this a trend that will continue? As businesses collect vast quantities of information from their customers and commercial partners, how can this data be visualized for insights? Is the data dashboard now not fit for purpose

According to Gartner ’s top 10 data and analytical trends of 2020, the use of analytics dashboards will decline being replaced by automated data stories over the next three-to-five years. Is visualizing data about to radically change?

The dashboard has been a cornerstone of data analytics for decades. Is this about to change, as AI […]

America’s Federal Robot Subsidy Hurts Workers

America’s Federal Robot Subsidy Hurts Workers

A tax subsidy for automation would overturn an assumption made by economists since at least the 1930s. The assumption is that technology, in order to displace human labor, must perform a workplace task more efficiently than a human. If tax policy penalizes the employment of human labor relative to the deployment of robots, the basis for expecting even these “efficiency gains” as an upshot of a vanishing human workforce also vanishes. Machines can displace workers while still lagging them in productivity. They can win due to a subsidy that rigs the game in their favor.

It’s not science fiction, but […]

The Future of Labor in an AI World

The Future of Labor in an AI World

(WhoIsDanny/Shutterstock) What will you be doing on Labor Day in 2030? How about five years from today? Will your job still be available? What skills will your employer demand? Nobody can forecast the future with total certainty, but a conservative reading of the workplace tea leaves suggests labor is in for a bumpy ride as technological advances make some jobs obsolete, while opening up new opportunities.

It’s a safe bet that people employed in the collection and analysis of data will be in demand in 2030. In fact, given the trajectory of big data analytics and artificial intelligence and where […]

Strong Links Between Automation and Inequality: Job-Replacing Tech Has Directly Driven the Income Gap Since the Late 1980s

Strong Links Between Automation and Inequality: Job-Replacing Tech Has Directly Driven the Income Gap Since the Late 1980s

New research by MIT economist Daron Acemoglu shows that since 1987, automation has taken away jobs from lower-skill workers without being replaced by an equivalent number of labor-market opportunities. Modern technology affects different workers in different ways. In some white-collar jobs — designer, engineer — people become more productive with sophisticated software at their side. In other cases, forms of automation, from robots to phone-answering systems, have simply replaced factory workers, receptionists, and many other kinds of employees.

Now a new study co-authored by an MIT economist suggests automation has a bigger impact on the labor market and income inequality […]

Think a Robot Couldn’t Take Your Job? Think Again

Think a Robot Couldn’t Take Your Job? Think Again

Robots and automation have moved far beyond the factory floor and threaten to change the work of 60 per cent of British Columbians. As well as grilling burgers and soaking up the last of the summer sun, Labour Day is a time to think about working people and the future of work. In 2020, that inevitably means thinking about pandemic-driven working from home. But there’s another trend that deserves at least as much attention: automation.

If you think automation has nothing to do with you and your job, you may want to think again. According to a new BC Federation […]
