'Cobots' set to take Quinte manufacturers into the future

Collaborative robots are set to take local manufacturers into the future with the ability to work safely alongside human coworkers in production areas doing complicated tasks, says a Belleville automation firm that is providing the technology. UNIVERSAL ROBOTS The collaborative robots – aka ‘cobots’ — are coming to a manufacturing plant near you.

But unlike James Cameron’s ‘Terminator’ robot which goes back in time to destroy its quarry, new cobots could take Quinte manufacturers into the future by saving them from closure amid a major shortage of skilled labour, said a Belleville-based automation firm Tuesday.

New technologies are expected to create more jobs in 2020, according to independent research by recruiter Robert Half.

While an earlier report by McKinsey & Company indicates that new technologies are expected to automate 25% to 46% of existing Australian workforce activities by 2030, the survey findings indicate that the rise of machines isn’t simply taking away jobs, but rather changing the definition of existing roles and creating new ones.
