Urgent reforms needed on education and jobs, says Syed Saddiq

A report has found that the Malaysian job market suffers from a mismatch between workers’ skills and the types of jobs available. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Former youth minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has called for a much needed reform of the education and employment systems, as young jobseekers are reported to be finding it increasingly difficult to obtain jobs that suit their abilities and qualifications.

Syed Saddiq said that “it is high time the government works on a matching scheme in which you tie in the demand of corporates to the courses being taught in universities”.

He said science […]

Future is Now: How COVID-19 is Propelling Automation and Pushing Us to a World Without Work

What will be the future of employment be like with the world racing toward automation? | Image credit: Reuters In Meno , Plato wrote about a gifted sculptor, Daedalus, who made such lifelike statues, that they had to be tied up so that they don’t run away. This story perturbed his disciple Aristotle a lot as it made him wonder what would happen to human employment if ‘every tool we had could perform its task, either at our bidding or itself perceiving the need’. In 2020, however, this is not a novel prospect. Most tools we own can, in […]

Visualizing Data: How Data Insights Could Be About To Change

Gartner recently noted a shift away from data dashboard. Is this a trend that will continue? As businesses collect vast quantities of information from their customers and commercial partners, how can this data be visualized for insights? Is the data dashboard now not fit for purpose

According to Gartner ’s top 10 data and analytical trends of 2020, the use of analytics dashboards will decline being replaced by automated data stories over the next three-to-five years. Is visualizing data about to radically change?

The dashboard has been a cornerstone of data analytics for decades. Is this about to change, as AI […]

The Great Services Illusion

The Great Services Illusion

In the wake of COVID-19, some economists are calling for developing countries to shift from industrialization to services, or even to bypass the manufacturing stage of development altogether. But blind faith in services-led growth is a dangerous illusion, and the arguments supporting it are deeply flawed.

CAMBRIDGE – As the world prepares for the post-pandemic era, the quest for sustainable economic growth is becoming ever more intense – especially for developing countries. It is tempting to call for these countries – the main engine of global growth in recent decades – to shift their development strategies from industrialization to services. […]

The Future of Labor in an AI World

The Future of Labor in an AI World

(WhoIsDanny/Shutterstock) What will you be doing on Labor Day in 2030? How about five years from today? Will your job still be available? What skills will your employer demand? Nobody can forecast the future with total certainty, but a conservative reading of the workplace tea leaves suggests labor is in for a bumpy ride as technological advances make some jobs obsolete, while opening up new opportunities.

It’s a safe bet that people employed in the collection and analysis of data will be in demand in 2030. In fact, given the trajectory of big data analytics and artificial intelligence and where […]

Kenya should take tech path to industrialisation

Kenya should take tech path to industrialisation

An aerial view of Nairobi CBD. FILE PHOTO | NMG Two weeks ago, I wrote about cheap labour not being the industrialisation path for Kenya. I cited the story a young engineer who worked in a company producing bottle caps for 12 hours a day and calculated his labour output for the day as Sh6 million after producing 1.2 million bottle caps before talking about the subject matter of cheap labour.

Now, I had indicated that the reason behind writing the article was to respond to the follow-up analysis that cheap labour was what industrialised the East Asian Tigers but […]

Think a Robot Couldn’t Take Your Job? Think Again

Robots and automation have moved far beyond the factory floor and threaten to change the work of 60 per cent of British Columbians. As well as grilling burgers and soaking up the last of the summer sun, Labour Day is a time to think about working people and the future of work. In 2020, that inevitably means thinking about pandemic-driven working from home. But there’s another trend that deserves at least as much attention: automation.

If you think automation has nothing to do with you and your job, you may want to think again. According to a new BC Federation […]

Posted September 4th, 2020 for British Columbia Federation of Labour (Unceded Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh and Musqueam territories — Vancouver, BC) Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, when many people think about the future of work, they think about the trend toward working from home. But a research report released today by the BC Federation of Labour suggests the increasing trend toward automation deserves urgent attention.

“ Anyone who thinks they’re immune to automation should think twice,” BCFED president Laird Cronk said. “This report finds that three out of five BC workers are at medium-to-high likelihood of having their jobs affected in the […]

Are robots eating our jobs? Not according to AI

Are robots eating our jobs? Not according to AI

Automation has been gradually transforming the workplace for years (think Excel spreadsheets or chatbots). As artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and deep learning systems that can learn from each other become more prevalent and smarter (think Alexa or IBM Watson), they continue to replace more manual, repetitive job tasks. Consequently, automation and robots are changing more jobs globally at breakneck speed.

A McKinsey Global Institute report suggests that between 400 million to 800 million jobs worldwide will be lost due to automation by 2030. The report claims that the U.S. could lose between 16 to 54 million jobs by 2030. […]
