Taking control of the robots

Taking control of the robots

Mention artificial intelligence (AI) to human resources managers and you are likely to be met with one of two extremes. Either the robots will take over the world and limit humans to a lifetime of unemployment and misery, or robots will take over the world and free humans for a lifetime of creativity and happiness.

Reality, of course, sits somewhere in the middle, but either way, the robots are coming; more than three-quarters (78 per cent) of HR departments expect to use machine learning in at least one HR process within two years, according to a report from management consultancy […]

Elon Musk’s “Giant Cybernetic Collectives”

Elon Musk’s “Giant Cybernetic Collectives”

Elon Musk often mentions cyborgs at events and during interviews. This concept is not just a funny remark, a sci-fi reference, or a way to throw around big terms to sound smarter. It’s an important paradigm, a lens we can look at the past with, and more importantly, a concept that will have a great impact on the future of our species.

Before unveiling the Tesla Model Y on Thursday night, Elon Musk walked us through the history of Tesla. In the beginning, there was only the original Roadster, and a relatively small team developed the Model S in a […]

Study: Managers say robots beat out humans for high-quality work

Study: Managers say robots beat out humans for high-quality work

Dive Brief:

Fifty-eight percent of managers in MindEdge and Skye Learning’s second annual future of work survey said that robots and automated processes perform better than humans. Of the 1,000 managers interviewed , nearly half said they expect automation to take over more jobs in the next five years.

According to the survey, a high percentage of tech companies (74%) have adopted advanced automation or robotics in the least few years. Study results found that 65% of respondents said they would keep the same level of automation and robots, even if the cost-savings that drove businesses to automate didn’t […]

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn’t afraid of the rise of robots, but she agrees with Bill Gates that they should be taxed for taking jobs

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez isn't afraid of the rise of robots, but she agrees with Bill Gates that they should be taxed for taking jobs

Unable to play video. HTML5 is not supported! Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has an unusual take on the risk of robots taking over US jobs.

The conventional wisdom is that business owners who replace human workers with robots will accumulate wealth — something a left-leaning politician would usually be opposed to.

Speaking at SXSW, Ocasio-Cortez said people should be "excited" for automation because it would leave people free to be more creative. She also thinks robots, or more precisely robot owners, should be taxed for replacing jobs. Speaking at SXSW over the weekend, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voiced her […]

Working Alongside People: Rise of the Cobots

Working Alongside People: Rise of the Cobots

Everyone’s biggest fear is the robots taking over the world. Artificial intelligence is continuously evolving and learning human behavior, and along with the rise of automation, the Terminator scenario does not seem too far-fetched.

What if, instead, they worked with us? Instead of the us or them situation, what if the situation changed to include both humans and robots? Working alongside robots does not sound too bad, does it?

This was the basic concept behind cobots. Read our research blog to find out more about what exactly a cobot is, how they work, what they do, and more. What are Cobots? […]

Is IT/OT Convergence Becoming Misguided Thinking?

Is IT/OT Convergence Becoming Misguided Thinking?

By Bill Lydon, Editor, Automation.com

The convergence of Information Technology (IT) & Operations Technology(OT) has been a growing topic of importance in manufacturing. Many times, however the focus on IT/OT convergence can be too narrow in scope to leverage the increasingly advanced technologies to achieve a manufacturing competitive advantage. In my experience, I find that IT/OT convergence presentations and discussions have, in many ways, continued to foster siloed suppliers and groups within a manufacturing company. This limits the scope of thinking about digitalization, which should ideally encompass the entire manufacturing process and ecosystem, including: Product design

Incoming supply chain […]

Age of automation: need for upskilling

In the last two decades, automation has made giant strides in the manufacturing sector. From changing the factory shop floor to the nature of employment, it has been rapidly transforming the traditional processes of manufacturing.

Today, as the fourth Industrial Revolution dawns upon us, advancements in the field of AI (artificial intelligence), machine learning and robotics have given rise to machines that are capable of a wide array of work activities. In fact, these machines can outperform humans not only in manual labour, but also in tasks that require cognitive abilities.

Needless to say, the manufacturing sector has benefited immensely following […]

Innovation Nation: Automation is changing how we work – for the better

Innovation Nation: Automation is changing how we work - for the better

This is the fourth edition in an eight-week series, made possible by MYOB, looking at how technology is changing the way New Zealand businesses operate.

While automation started off as machines handling simple tasks such as washing clothes and dishes, it now covers much more advanced work like picking fruit and driving cars.

In other words, automation is pushing into areas that were once the domain of human workers, and the reason for that is a never ending demand for increased business efficiencies and at times, the inability to find people to do the work.Automation is an accelerating global megatrend […]

8 jobs in Georgia that are most automation-proof

8 jobs in Georgia that are most automation-proof

The newest Brookings Institution report says 36 million Americans work in positions that could soon be automated. People are rightly worried that conveniences like self-checkout will strip jobs from those who need them. The competition that used to come from an eager co-worker now comes from the automation that’s poised to take away work from humans.

If you’re losing sleep worrying that a robot will move in on your paycheck, there are some jobs that will be automation-proof. "It all comes down to tasks," Workopolis advised. "The more a job can be broken down into a series of routine tasks, […]
