Automation can cost 1 million jobs but create as many by 2030

According to a report presented this Thursday, adopting automation in Portugal can potentially lead to a loss of around 1.1 million jobs in the industry and commerce by 2030 but it may also create others in health, social assistance, science and construction.

The report from CIP – Business Confederation in Portugal, which is presented on Thursday in Lisbon at a conference on “The Future of Employment in Portugal”, said that “Portugal has a relatively high potential for automation due to the weight of industry and repetitive tasks recorded in various sectors,” and points to the digital transformation of Portugal’s society […]

Employment in the age of automation

The lift-operator is a peculiar person. He sits on a stool inside a small, claustrophobic space. In the olden days his job required quite a few skills. Back then, lifts were manually operated with a large lever, and it was the responsibility of the lift-operator to regulate the speed of the lift. His task also involved synchronising his timing in order to make sure that the lift always stopped parallel to the floor. It was almost as exciting as landing an aeroplane. However, nowadays most lifts can be operated by the user with the mere push of a button. […]

87% of companies will add workers this year, despite rise of robots

87% of companies will add workers this year, despite rise of robots

More employers than ever before (87%) will either increase or maintain their workforce numbers this year because of automation, according to a ManpowerGroup report released on Friday. The report surveyed 19,000 employers across 44 countries, assessing the effects of automation on job growth in the next couple years.

Robots replacing human jobs remains a top concern in the workforce, as automated systems are able to complete manual tasks at a much faster rate than humans. Instead of eliminating or reducing employment opportunities, robots will actually cause organizations to create new jobs, the report found. Other research has come to the […]

Such a transition could trigger large-scale redundancies by as early as 2020. But, which jobs are in danger of being automated first?

What’s next in automation as Missouri minimum wage increases?

Missouri’s minimum wage will increase to $8.60 per hour in January, thanks to the voter-approved Proposition B that appeared on the November ballot. The increase is part of a four-year escalator that will raise the minimum wage to $12/hour in 2023 for non-exempt employees.

Proponents argue it’s time to increase the minimum wage to help those on the low end of the economic spectrum, closing the gap in income inequality. Opponents suggest raising the minimum wage leads to fewer jobs that less expensive automation could accomplish. The Show-Me Institute, a politically conservative think […]

This concern, while understandable, is unfounded. In fact, AI will be the greatest job engine the world has […]
