Top 10 Automation and RPA Predictions For 2019

Automation will redefine the next phase of digital transformation as it delivers new levels of customer value coming from higher quality and dependability, deeper personalization, faster delivery of products, and greater convenience offerings. Robotic process automation (RPA) is growing at a fast pace with projections from Gartner forecasting that the RPA business will grow 57% over the next year. Here are the major RPA predictions for 2019 that are all set to redefine the new year and the years to come.

The Artificial Intelligence (AI) wave is here and RPA is an […]

How do universities prepare graduates for jobs that don’t yet exist?

How do universities prepare graduates for jobs that don't yet exist?

Universities determine the future: they shape it through their research and prepare students for tomorrow’s jobs. But in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution , it’s hard to know what the future will look like. Technological changes such as automation and artificial intelligence are expected to transform the employment landscape. The question is: will our education system keep up?

The answer matters because an estimated 65% of children entering primary schools today will work in jobs and functions that don’t currently exist, according to a recent Universities UK report . The research, which explores the “rapid pace of change […]

The future of work in sub-Saharan Africa

The future of work in sub-Saharan Africa

African youth in agriculture Sierra Leone Telegraph: 17 December 2018:

A recent IMF strategy paper says that “Far-reaching changes in technology, climate, and global economic integration are transforming the world of work in ways that we do not yet fully understand.”

The authors of the paper ask: Will the swift technological advances of the Fourth Industrial Revolution raise the standards of living for everyone? Or will robots massively displace workers leading to a jobless future where only a few benefit from the fruits of innovation? Will mitigation efforts be able to cushion the adverse effects of climate change, including food shortages and […]

Robots and Humans: Better Together

Robots and Humans: Better Together

By Daniel Theobald, CIO and co-founder of Vecna Technologies

This paper discusses the opportunities discovered through technological innovation, and how robots and humans working together create critical economic benefits. This is the conclusion of a four-part series focused on robotic integration in the material handling value stream.

A recent study by Baylor University found more than a third of people are afraid they will lose their job to a robot. While this fear is understandable, evidence indicates robotic integration will increase roles, worker safety, productivity, and satisfaction. Humans are, and will always be, a crucial part of […]

Skills for the 21st century

Brookings scholar Harry Holzer just released an interesting short piece analyzing the potential impact of artificial intelligence on job displacement; in it, makes five recommendations for mitigating AI’s impact on middle-class job opportunities. Educators at all levels should teach noncognitive skills, while continuing to foster narrower, in-demand technical skills that are connected to immediate employment opportunities. Image via Twenty20. Summarizing OECD data on the topic, Holzer estimates that between 10 and 30 percent of US jobs are susceptible to partial or complete automation, with lower-skilled occupations at a much higher risk of complete displacement by AI. Higher skilled jobs […]

Don’t let automation tomorrow distract from pay today

Don’t let automation tomorrow distract from pay today

CC0 Creative Commons As you may have heard, horrifying studies say Las Vegas is one of the most likely places in the solar system for automation to replace oodles and oodles of jobs. Because jobs in hotels and travel and food service are among those most likely to be automated.

For example, a famous study from Oxford researchers a few years ago that said up to half the jobs in Las Vegas could be robotted right out of existence by the early 2030s. Pricewaterhouse Coopers followed up by predicting automation will all but eliminate retail jobs (the second largest occupation […]

Why The Agile Workplace Must Include AI And Humans

Why The Agile Workplace Must Include AI And Humans

Getty Getty The way work gets done is changing drastically. While many companies use outsourcing, temporary workers and agency partners to extend in-house capabilities and ramp up support during high-demand times, the majority of business operations continue to be handled by a core group of full- and part-time permanent workers. While this may have sufficed in the past, HR and business leaders need to rethink and redesign their legacy employment models to ensure business sustainability.

What should the workforce of the future look like? Unlike today’s model, it will be made up of three distinct types of “workers”: traditional (full- […]

Okay, let’s start with … 1 big thing: Economic juice Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty For more than a year, the U.S. jobless rate has hovered right around 4% — including the last three months, when it’s been a mind-boggling 3.7%, a half-century low. Fast-growing companies desperate for workers have […]

Coping with FIRe

Coping with FIRe

I had the privilege to listen to Dr. Aniceto Orbeta of the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), the government think tank, when he made a presentation on Labor and Global Development before the People Management Association of the Philippines.

Now, the FIRe in the title of this column doesn’t refer to firing laborers but rather the shorthand for what Dr. Orbeta in his presentation calls the Fourth Industrial Revolution (FIRe). According to Dr. Orbeta, the First Revolution was about steam, water, and mechanical production equipment, starting about 1784. The Second Revolution was about division of labor, electricity, mass production, […]
