Shadow Treasurer of the Australian Labor Party, Chris Bowen who is the Opposition Minister for Government expenditure and revenue raising, delivered a speech to the progressive think tank PerCapita in Sydney on June 9th, expressing his resistance to the concept of a Universal Basic Income (UBI), despite the support within the Labor Party for such a policy. Bowen describes the UBI as a “terrible idea” and claims that the model would undermine the Labor Party principle of ensuring dignity through work in Australia. Bowen then makes another common argument against a UBI, that it […]

Come friendly robots and take our dullest jobs

Come friendly robots and take our dullest jobs

We are currently going through one of those periodic phases of “automation anxiety” when we become convinced that the robots are coming for our jobs. These fears are routinely pooh-poohed by historians and economists. The historians point out that machines have been taking away jobs since the days of Elizabeth I – who refused to grant William Lee a patent on his stocking frame on the grounds that it would take work away from those who knitted by hand. And while the economists concede that machines do indeed destroy some jobs, they point out that the increased productivity that […]

Universal Income and Population Control Are Inexorably Tied

Universal Income and Population Control Are Inexorably Tied

A lot of people—me included—are excited about the concept of Universal Basic Income. This is the idea of eliminating all or most of the need for someone to struggle to survive, thus giving them time to dedicate to higher-level efforts like art, science, etc.

A basic example would be someone who wishes they could be a painter, or a musician, or an architect, but they can’t afford to go to school or to practice their art because of their main bills. Basic Income would provide an amount of money for free to them, and every other citizen, so that they […]

The re-manufacturing of American manufacturing

The re-manufacturing of American manufacturing

I’ve just ended a trip from a couple locations that were featured in two documentary films about jobs that are disappearing from America and about the demise of manufacturing here in the United States. “American Jobs” was produced by Greg Spotts in 2005 and “American Made Movie” was produced by Vincent Vittorio and Nathaniel McGill in 2013. With all the political rhetoric being thrown around haphazardly by politicians in Washington about the need to “make America great again!” and the importance of bringing jobs back to the states and keeping them here, especially manufacturing jobs, I decided to pay […]

Latest MIT Research Paper Analyzes Causes of Urban Change

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) carries out numerous researches on almost all fields of science possible and has also provided accurate results. Owing to its constantly efficient performance, the institution has earned itself a reputation of being reliable in terms of information. We humans can predict a number of scenarios through long-term observation and accurate calculations but we fail to predict our own lives. A latest MIT research tries to fulfill this motive. The initial efforts for the same began four years ago. This technology is finally put to proper use which might help in attaining impressive results.

Why universal basic income is gaining support, critics

Why universal basic income is gaining support, critics

Some see it as a way to compensate for the traditional jobs with benefits that will be wiped out by robotics, artificial intelligence, self-driving vehicles, globalization and the gig economy. Others see it as a way to reduce income inequality or to create a more efficient, less stigmatizing safety net than our current mishmash of welfare benefits.

“I think ultimately we will have to have some kind of universal basic income, I don’t think we are going to have a choice,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the World Government Summit in Dubai in February.

In a commencement speech at Harvard […]

Courtney McCaffrey and others from AT Kearney published an article on the debate around Universal Basic Income (UBI) in markets throughout the world. Politicians, in both Europe and North America, are winning on campaign trails with talk about returning control to the common people from the economic system in the globe.

But one of the big worker displacers is automation and new technologies. Oxford University reported 47% of US jobs will be taken over by automation in the next two decades. A UBI is being offered as an economic buffer for such workplace and technology transitions.Such a […]

Las Vegas Is Getting A Robot Bar Where Bionic Bartenders Mix Drinks

First, they are making your hamburgers, now they are mixing your cocktails. America’s first robot bar is opening in Las Vegas this month. The Tipsy Robot bar will open in Planet Hollywood with drinks being poured by its fully autonomous robot staff. Customers order a drink through their smartphones or by using a tablet at the bar. You’ll need to register with your email address and get a QR code with your drink order in it. The robot will read the code and reach its articulated arm to the ceiling to pour out your favorite tipple from one of […]

Universal basic income?

Universal basic income?

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has advocated for the introduction of universal basic income (UBI) during his 50 state tour in the USA. Zuckerberg was impressed by the Alaska Permanent Fund , where oil money is paid as a dividend to residents of the state. The policy is similar to UBI.

Zuckerberg’s comments came after Hawaii became the first US state to pass a bill supporting UBI . The HCR 89 bill is intended to "introduce a conversation" about the future of Hawaii residents. Chris Lee, state representative of Hawaii said: "Planning for the future isn’t politically sexy and won’t win […]

Erik on Basic Income

Erik on Basic Income

I’m so excited! My daughter, Kristina, is in town until Sunday. I just picked her up at the airport early, early this morning, and while en route, I was reminded of another funny story showcasing the patheticness (new word) of my tiny brain. Above one of the highway signs, there’s a picture of a bear with the word, “zoo” on top of it. Did I put that together in a logical way? Nope. I thought it said, “200 bears” and wondered where the hell they’d keep that many and why they were advertising it. Sigh. Okay, check out this […]
