25% of CEOs’ Time Is Spent on Tasks Machines Could Do

Soon after taking office, the new president created a national commission to examine the impact of automation. No family should pay an unjust price for progress, he announced, yet automation should not be viewed as an enemy. “If we understand it, if we plan for it, if we apply it well, automation will not be a job destroyer or a family displaced. Instead, it can remove dullness from the work of man and provide him with more than man has ever had before.”

The U.S. president who spoke those words was Lyndon B. Johnson , and the year was 1964.

Ben Gummer: Utopia will never exist no matter what ‘Petit Ben’ may tell us about taxing robots

French socialist Benoit Hamon’s views on Utopia do not find favour with Ipswich MP Ben Gummer . Photo: AP Ipswich MP Ben Gummer’s weekly column looks at why the French Socialist Party is wide of the mark with its ideas of Utopia

I have a new namesake in politics – this time in France. On Sunday Benoît Hamon gained the candidacy of the French Socialist Party, a feat as remarkable as the capture of our own Labour Party by Jeremy Corbyn and the Republican nomination of Donald Trump.

Many false generalisations about the political mood have been made in the last […]

The future of manufacturing

The future of manufacturing

There’s growing optimism about a revival, but it won’t be what you think

The other day I had a conversation with a Manchester stockbroker who was bullish on the future of U.S. manufacturing. Parenthetically, this claim and others he made reminded me of two things about stockbrokers. One is by design – they have an eye to the future. The second is that they are capable of disrupting conventional wisdom with their insights.

So what are we to believe about the current state and future of manufacturing careers in the U.S.? Recent history and economic news has shown a declining […]

Robots Answer Shortage of Humans as Manufacturers Relocate

Nearshoring is reducing distances of shipments of export cargo and import cargo in international trade. Nearshoring —in which companies move production facilities closer to their consumer markets—is a phenomenon that appears to have found its footing.

A 2016 annual survey from Alix Partners of manufacturing and distribution companies in North America and western Europe found that 69 percent say they are considering nearshoring—up from 40 percent the year before. More than two-thirds say they’ve nearshored in the past three years or plan to do so in the coming three. One of the drivers […]

The Guardian view on basic income: a worthwhile debate, not yet a policy | Editorial (theguardian.com)

"Theory is easier than practice. Set the basic income too low, and far from empowering workers, it could act as a wage subsidy, allowing employers to hold salaries down, as many argue happened with tax credits. Too high, and while it might transform power relationships in the workplace, giving people the freedom to turn down low-paid work, it might prove a disincentive to working altogether. And that’s before we consider how it might be paid for."

Matt Booth

Unemployment is still quite high. If UBI was a reality, I’d work less then I do now. The company I work for is […]

India floats the idea of a universal basic income

India floats the idea of a universal basic income

Basic needs NOVEMBER 8th was not just the day of Donald Trump’s election. It was also when Indians found out most banknotes would lose all value unless promptly exchanged. Ever since, many have expected their patience in enduring the ensuing chaos to be rewarded in some way. Might scrapped cash unredeemed by presumed tax-dodgers be recycled into a lump-sum payment to each and every citizen? Or would the annual budget, presented on February 1st, be full of giveaways ahead of a string of state elections? In the event, the budget was restrained to the point of dullness. But the […]

Are we ready for a universal basic income?

Are we ready for a universal basic income?

FREE money for all! What a lovely idea, right? There are few people on the planet who would turn down some pocket money, gifted you from the state, with absolutely no strings attached.

In its simplest form, that’s what a Universal Basic Income (UBI) is. The idea that the government would provide every adult citizen a flat payment, regardless of their engagement in employment or skill building activities. This would be implemented as a replacement of the more common benefits and welfare programmes we see across the world.

The notion of money for nothing is always going to grab people’s attention. […]
