Your View: Why Andrew Yang is right about risks of automation

(Leon Neal/Getty) Recently, The Morning Call ran an op-ed urging us to ignore presidential candidate Andrew Yang and have faith that automation is good for the economy (“Your View: Ignore Andrew Yang. Automation is good for our economy,” Nov. 2). The writer concludes by saying that automation will free us to seek “meaningful employment.”

We can assume meaningful employment refers to professional jobs that are mostly service-oriented white collar careers. Guess what? Meaningful employment can be automated too.

The Coming Robot Apocalypse: Disruption and Opportunity in an AI-Powered Future

Guest Contribution by Jason Finkelstein, SVP of Global Marketing, AdRoll (a division of NextRoll Inc.)

When The Terminator debuted in 1984, it presented the world with a very tactile and very simple vision for the coming battle between humanity and the machines. For those not well-versed in ‘80s sci-fi thrillers, the film series focuses on military AI that gains self-awareness and sets out to exterminate humanity using all sorts of robots, cyborgs, and automated drones.

Here in 2019, 22 years after Skynet gained self-awareness in the fictional universe, humanity seems to be on the verge of a very different kind […]

Healthcare providers today are faced with increasing labor costs and a shortage of workers and are thus investing in robotics. Quicker to train and cheaper to maintain, nurse service robots are programmed to deftly accomplish […]

WILL MAN ALWAYS FEAR THE MACHINE?

WILL MAN ALWAYS FEAR THE MACHINE?

Throughout history, people have often felt threatened by machines. With every technological innovation that offers faster and more accurate options, there has been a bleak picture for jobs and employment. Yet, here we are today, having survived the massive automation of the industrial revolution and the age of computerization. The industrial revolution transformed the rules of economics, employment and the face of society. Then came computerization, which, despite our skepticism, is now an intrinsic part of our lives. Interestingly, what both of these revolutions ushered in was a focus on and an expectation of increased efficiency.

So, will the Artificial […]

3 Reasons Why Truckers Jobs Are Safe From Automation

3 Reasons Why Truckers Jobs Are Safe From Automation

When people talk about the jobs that are likely to be automated in the coming years, trucking is one of the most common to be cited, with innovations by companies like Otto used to exemplify the risk drivers face.

It’s a risk that a new study suggests is significantly overblown, and the authors provide three reasons why this is so. A more expansive role than we think

The first reason is that trucking involves quite a bit more than ‘just’ driving the rig, so even if the driving part can be safely automated, that’s not to say that the role […]

GUEST EDITORIAL: Minimum wage is a task for lawmakers

GUEST EDITORIAL: Minimum wage is a task for lawmakers

Joe Gruters Hide caption Once again the Florida Constitution is under assault by very well-funded special interests pursuing bad policy, and pursuing it in the worst place. This time it’s the minimum wage proposal.

This has become all too common. When special interests cannot get their way through the Legislature — the representative body elected by Floridians to pass policy-based laws — they do an end run via the constitutional amendment process. This is how we got the embarrassment of pig crates in the Florida Constitution. This betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of a constitution.

There are two solid […]
