Is Technology Destroying or Creating Jobs?

– By Mr. Sanjay Sehgal, Chairman and CEO, MSys Group

Every single technology dystopian movie, has preyed on a single human fear – when computers take over, human beings will become redundant.

The Matrix trilogy, Terminator, Robocop, I-Robot, or even that disaster of a film where human beings aspired to a crime-free world by arresting “criminals” on their potential to commit crime; all spoke to that fear of computers tyrannically ruling the earth, and served as symbolic cautionary tales of retaining control of technology, firmly in human hands. But at the end of the day, in every single one of these movies, […]

Certain jobs sure. And we’re not there yet. Of course once full automation exists there won’t be any jobs anymore.

The actual manufacture of a robot, depending on its scope of automation, ranges from inexpensive to insane. Most industrial robots are in the upper middle.

Some simple robots are cheap, mostly mechanical.

So, just making one overlaps both our points of view.Setting mechanical ones aside, the programming, test, safety, and depending on what is needed, interactions between multiple ones is very expensive!A seat of software can cost a years wage for an assembly line worker, and the people needed to do this work tend to be highly educated and expensive as well. That can change, and maybe will as tech advances and […]

Will Smart Machines Kill Jobs or Create Better Ones?

An attendant stands next to a CloudMinds Technology Inc. XR-1 commercial humanoid service robot at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, China, on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019. The conference runs through Aug. 31. In one vision of the not-too-distant future, robots handle half of all work tasks, leaving legions of humans unemployed and insecure. In another scenario, those same technologies revolutionize rather than reduce opportunities for people, creating jobs that have yet to be imagined. Such are the stakes as a new wave of automation reshapes the workplace, accelerated by the pandemic.

Automation helps keeps factories running amid COVID-19 social distancing

Automation helps keeps factories running amid COVID-19 social distancing

An machine at EVCO Plastics in DeForest packages COVID test parts into thermal form trays. Because fewer workers are on a production line, employees are better able to remain distanced from each other amid the COVID-19 pandemic to prevent the spread of the virus. Robots aren’t really taking away jobs, manufacturers say. They’re just doing the work that no one else will do.

From simple labeling machines to complex robots that can deftly make a part or product from base materials to completion, automation has become a major part of Wisconsin’s manufacturing landscape. Reports throughout the years have warned of […]

AI is leading the digital transformation strategy in finance

AI is leading the digital transformation strategy in finance

While the job of the company CFO is most unlikely to be threatened by artificial intelligence (AI) – they’re going to be dealing with a lot of people who do feel their employment threatened. The weight of responsibility to assuage such fears will increasingly fall squarely on the finance leader’s shoulders.

There are two threads to the ‘robots won’t take jobs’ argument. One claim is that robots and other automation tools will help finance departments focus more on the human and strategic aspects of their jobs — such as engaging with fellow employees on budgets, governance issues and risk. Consequently, […]

The pandemic has scrambled expectations for how quickly shifts in the workplace would take place, and that in turn has left the state scrambling to make sure lower-wage workers, hard hit by the downturn, aren’t left behind as the recovery takes hold.

“Trends we initially thought would take more than 10 years to occur happened in a matter of weeks, requiring workforce, education, training, and the world to quickly adapt and adopt strategies to fit the current reality and new predicted future,” according to the Colorado Workforce Development Council’s 2020 Talent Pipeline Report , which came out on Tuesday.Colorado […]

Jobs That Might Not Exist in 50 Years

Jobs That Might Not Exist in 50 Years

With jobless claims approaching 55 million since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and a sluggish recovery , thousands of jobs are unlikely to ever return. Whether that’s because businesses will ultimately shutter (or permanently reduce staff) or industries will be reinvented, there are myriad unknowns when trying to chart projections for the economic future of the U.S. economy. A paper released in May 2020 by the Becker Friedman Institute at the University of Chicago projected that 42% of layoffs caused by the pandemic will be permanent .

In addition to fewer jobs being available in certain sectors, other employment […]
