IT Jobs in the US Growing Much Faster Than All Others

The share of IT jobs in the United States has grown eight times faster than all other jobs in the past decade, according to a study from the University of British Columbia and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

While traditional manufacturing jobs declining due to automation and offshoring , the researchers say, IT-intensive manufacturing jobs increased substantially, boosting productivity like never before.

The amount of IT jobs grew by 19.5% between 2004 and 2017, while other occupations only grew by 2.4%. The study also found that while most jobs are impacted by a slowdown in employment and wage gains, IT […]

Automation and employment

Automation and employment

Everywhere you turn, tasks traditionally being performed by humans are now the target of computerized automation.

It is our view this is not good at all. In fact, we think it is a disaster in the making, especially for people who do not have advanced education degrees or technical/trade expertise for the jobs of the future.

We know we risk being called Luddites this Sunday morning. A luddite is a person who dislikes technology, and the origins of the term are believed to be a reference to individuals in the 1800s who opposed technology in the textile industry and destroyed weaving […]

Exclusive Q&A: Which Retail Jobs Are Safe From A Robot Takeover? Featured

Retail, hospitality and other service-oriented industries have been seen as relatively immune to the job-killing effects of robotics, automation and AI. But as these technologies grow more sophisticated, retail’s resistance is weakening. Futurist Martin Ford, author of Rise Of The Robots: Technology And The Threat Of A Jobless Future , notes that robots are already reducing (or eliminating) the number of humans needed to do many jobs, including:

• Warehouse work;
• Checking in-store inventory;
• Providing customer service; and • Staffing points of sale.In an exclusive interview with Retail TouchPoints , Ford identifies the advances in robotics and AI […]

How great a risk is the rise of machines to rural jobs?

Central Queensland-based agricultural technology pioneer, SwarmFarm Robotics, is preparing to start commercial production of its “SwarmBot” mini driverless tractors. Job automation is fast becoming a reality across the economy of developed nations, and rural Australia is no exception. But job loss forecasts may not be as dire as previously predicted.

That’s according to the Job Vulnerability in Australia report, released today by the Regional Australia Institute.

“Our latest research shows that 22pc of jobs nationally are highly vulnerable to automation, which is considerably less than previous forecasts of 44pc,” RAI chief executive Jack Archer said.Automation can include everything from new software […]

Growth and productivity in information technology jobs outpaces other jobs

Information technology jobs have outpaced most other jobs in growth and productivity since 2004 , a new study found. Positions in cybersecurity, and big data, for example, are information technology jobs. These types of jobs are providing workers in the US with long-lasting financial stability.

Giovanni Gallipoli and Christos Makridis wrote about their study and findings in the Journal of Monetary Economics (citation below) . Prof. Gallipoli is Associate Professor from the Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Dr. Makridis Christos serves as a Digital Fellow at the MIT Sloan Initiative on the Digital Economy.

Information technology jobs outpace most other jobs in productivity and growth since 2004

Jobs in information technology-like computer software, big data, and cybersecurity-are providing American workers with long-lastings financial stability, suggests a new study from the University of British Columbia and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"The future of jobs is in IT, and IT-intensive tasks" said Giovanni Gallipoli, co-author and associate professor from the Vancouver School of Economics at UBC. "Growth and productivity in jobs involving IT tasks are very strong, and workers who can perform such tasks have a clear competitive advantage in the labour market."

The study reveals the well documented slow-down in employment and wage gains associated with skills and […]

Automation and Jobs: When Technology Boosts Employment

47 Pages Posted: 18 Mar 2017 Last revised: 28 Mar 2018 Abstract

Do industries shed jobs when they adopt new labor-saving technologies? Sometimes productivity-enhancing technology increases industry employment instead. In manufacturing, jobs grew along with productivity for a century or more; only later did productivity gains bring declining employment. What changed? Markets became saturated. While the literature on structural change provides reasons for the decline in the manufacturing share of employment, few papers can explain both the rise and subsequent fall. Using two centuries of data, a simple model of demand accurately explains the rise and fall of employment […]

Impact of AI on banking jobs: Industry’s reaction to ex-Barclays boss’ comments

An ex-Barclays chief executive last week claimed that AI will halve the number of jobs in the banking sector, but plenty of other industry voices have differing opinions concerning how the technology will affect financial services The impact of AI on banking jobs is a hotly-disputed topic that has been intensified after an ex-Barclays chief executive suggested the emerging technology will halve employment in the sector.

Antony Jenkins’ comments have received both support and opposition from many prominent figures, some of whom feel artificial intelligence (AI) is a threat to job security , and some who see it as an […]

Every year, Canadians gather in early September to celebrate Labour Day. For many, it serves primarily as summer’s last hurrah. But Labour Day transcends barbeques and the back-to-school blues, stretching as it […]
